2002 Monte Carlo, Inoperable Fuel Gage with P0463

Recommended Posts

Fuel gage has not worked for 3 years and I get the code P0463 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input. My fuel gage was constantly pinned on FULL, and at some point when it was close to empty it defaulted to EMPTY.

Based on the research and diagnostics I did, I found that the Fuel Level Sensor needed replacing. The fuel level sensor is part of the fuel pump in the tank. Luckily, I can access the fuel pump from the trunk

When I pulled the fuel pump out, it was immediately obvious that something was wrong with the fuel level sensor as the arm was loose and flopped around, here is the sensor up close, you will notice when you compare it to the photo that follows, that the two followers are worn out.

Here is the new level sensor, notice the difference in the two followers compared to the prior photo. That is quite a bit of wear.

Fuel level sensor in place

I replaced the pump with the new fuel level sensor in place and WOW, the fuel gage worked perfect! I can't believe I put up with this for so long and it only cost $27 to fix....
