cooling fans dont turn on

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. My 98 eldorado fans wont turn on and it quickly heats up while at idle. It is fine going down the road. The problem started when I tried to add R134a to the system (before that the display flashed low refrigerant ac will now shut down). When i added the refrigerant that is when i noticed the fans werent turning on and also the check engine light came on. Im actually not sure if the two are related because i bought the car in december and didnt use the ac however the ac warning did come on with the defrost. I pulled the codes and the only current ones were p1660 and c1235. oh and also the pass side doesnt blow hot or cold which i understand is a common problem. The family and I are headed to the adirondacks next week and would like to fix the issue if it isnt too costly before we leave or decide if i need to take the roadmaster :bump: instead. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Kraatz

Do a search of P1660 its related to the cooling fans, I have posted a couple of schematics related to cooling fan issues, search P1660 and my name

Be sure and check the OBD codes. One or more of them will tell you why the Check Engine light came on, and is likely related to the cooling fan problem. Likely a connector got shoved off while you were working on the car, or a fuse went out on you.

There are three relays that control the cooling fans. They are below the fans. Make sure that the connectors are on these relays and that any wiring harness connectors are OK.

The OBD codes should tell the rest of the tale.
