C1242 - Pump Motor Circuit Open

Recommended Posts

I have a 1998 Seville STS with code B1242. Can anyone please tell me what that is and what might be the cause?

Thank You

From what I can find there is no B1242. B is a BODY code. Engine CODES are P or Powertrain codes. If you go to the bottom of this post by me, you can go to OBD2 codes and find your code.

But, I think your code is a C or CHASSIS code. C1242 is

C1242 BPMV Pump Motor Ground Circuit Open

Circuit Description

The BPMV pump motor ground is supplied through a ground stud on the pump motor to a good ground.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

All of the following conditions occur:

  • The pump relay is commanded OFF.
  • The pump motor ground resistance is greater than 6900 ohms.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

A malfunction DTC is stored.

  • The ABS/TCS/Stabilitrak® is disabled.
  • The ABS indicator is turned ON.
  • The TRACTION CONTROL indicator is turned ON.
  • The DIC displays the SERVICE STABILITY SYS message.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The condition for DTC is no longer present and you used scan tool Clear DTCs function.

  • The condition for DTC is no longer present and you used the On-Board Clear DTCs function.
  • The EBTCM does not detect the DTC in 50 drive cycles.

Diagnostic Aids

It is very important that a thorough inspection of the wiring and connectors be performed. Failure to carefully and fully inspect wiring and connectors may result in misdiagnosis, causing part replacement with reappearance of the malfunction.

  • An intermittent malfunction can be caused by poor connections, broken insulation, or a wire that is broken inside the insulation.
  • If an intermittent malfunction exists, refer to Intermittents and Poor Connections Diagnosis in Wiring Systems.
  1. Checks for good pump motor ground through the BPMV.

Thanks, Bro.

Where is the pump motor located?

I am not 100 percent sure, but I think its located on the driver side in front of the wheel area. You will see a bunch of brake lines connected to it

OK, thanks. I'll look for it.

My 96 had a single ground wire at the motor, you may need to remove an inspection cover. I am not sure if yours is the same

Can someone edit the title of this thread please? The only OBDII DTC with the numbers 1242 is C1242 which is a Chassis code as previously pointed out.

Specifically,

C1242 - Pump Motor Circuit Open

The pump motor referred to is part of a module that GM (in 1998) identified as the EBTCM (Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module) located at the LH front bottom corner of the engine cradle. Access through the LF wheel well or the bottom air deflector panel.

It is very important that a thorough inspection of the wiring and connectors be performed. Failure to carefully and fully inspect wiring and connectors may result in misdiagnosis, causing part replacement with reappearance of the malfunction.

•An intermittent malfunction can be caused by poor connections, broken insulation, or a wire that is broken inside the insulation.

•If an intermittent malfunction exists, refer to Intermittents and Poor Connections Diagnosis in Wiring Systems.

The above warning is repeated over and over in all sections of the Service Manuals. It's good advice.

The first step I would take is checking several fuses. In the underhood fuse box, a 40 Amp fuse labeled ABS MOT and a 30 Amp fuse labeled ABS SOL. In the (rear) underseat fuse box, a 10 Amp fuse labeled ABS.

Thanks for all the help and clarification. I had it scanned at Advance Auto and it looked like a B code to me but I have all of the symptoms noted above. Now to get to work.

Just as a clarification, you know that you can check the codes yourself right? You do not need to go to Advance Auto right?

No sir, I did not know that. Can I clear them myself too? How?

Jim posted you a good link but look at the bottom of this post by me, and look at the links to READING DTC codes plus there are links to what they mean

OK guys, I checked the 30 and 40 amp fuses under the hood and they were good as was the 10 amp fuse under the seat. I checked the ground on the pump and it is tight. I cleared the codes but the ABS and traction Control lights came back on and the Service Stability SYS came on in the info center.

What should I do now?

I went ahead and ran a new ground wire and now everything works fine and all the dash lights are out. Even though the ground at the pump was clean and tight it must be broken somewhere else. Anyway, problem solved thanks for all your help.

Very Interesting, have you checked the original ground wire for continuity with an ohm meter or test light to see if its broken?

No I did not as it disappears into the wiring harness and I have no idea where the other end goes. The way I diagnosed it was to clip a jumper cable to the stud on the end of the pump and the other end I clipped to the negative terminal on the battery. Once I knew for sure it was a bad ground I just replaced it. I figured the strut tower was a good place to ground as the battery is grounded to the chassis under the rear seat.

I will endeavor to find out where it is grounded for you. The manual may state so in detail. I believe you are ok with your ground, but it would be nice to confirm that the ground is in fact broken. It would also be interesting to see if anything else is grounded to the same location, although that would not matter if the ground wire is breached between the motor and the ground point and the problem is not the result of a corroded ground point.

Glad you are back in action, it seems the manual was right on!

  • 2 weeks later...

check that ground connection at the pump to see if it actually is grounded.

you can also supply an additional ground to the stud and see if the problem persists.

That is actually what he did, he added an additional ground and it worked. Odd Huh?

Therefore his original ground is broken some place. I am glad that you resurrected this thread, I had planned to see if I could find more info on the original ground.

  • 3 years later...

How easy was this repair, I am looking to buy a used 1999 Cadillac Seville STS that has this same symptom. I like the car from the photos, would just like to know the cost of the repair before I jump into this. Thanks.
