CTS Instrument Cluster Question

Recommended Posts

I currently have a 2005 CTS and love it! I purchased a new instrument cluster for it a few years back and was able to send it out to have the odometer miles updated on the new cluster I purchased (it was a used cluster) to keep everything legit as the miles are stored in the cluster and not the car's CPU (at least that is what I was told). I have a few questions for you all though...

  • Is it true that the miles are stored in the instrument cluster and not the CPU for a 2005 CTS?

  • If that is true for the 2005 CTS, is that also the case where the odometer miles are stored in the instrument cluster, not the car's CPU for the current CTS' (model years 2011+)?

  • I really like the new CTS Coupe (2011+ model years) and am wondering if it would be the same case if I was to buy a different instrument cluster where I could just send it out to have the correct miles programmed into the new cluster to keep everything on the up and up?

Thanks everyone!

Nicole

According to the service manual, the instrument panel requires no programming or setup.

I searched the service manual for 30 minutes and info regarding the odometer was not found, very odd

As far as I know, based on some discussions on other boards I am on...

On newer vehicles...

The mileage for the odometer is stored in the instrument cluster.

If the cluster is changed, then the mileage needs to be reset on the replacement cluster to reflect the current and accurate mileage.

That may be the case Jim and you are correct, but I was unable to confirm or verify that. Very odd

I don't know "FOR SURE" about Cadillacs...

But I do know that the newer GM pickups and Ford pickups... all store the odometer reading in the cluster.

A popular modification to BASE LEVEL pickups is installing the bash cluster from a more upscale one to get the added functionality of the extra bells and whistles of the upscale pickup without having to actually buy the upscale truck.

For instance...I have a base model 2006 Chevy Express work van.

I could go to the wrecking yard and find a dash cluster from a fancy, loaded out van, and swap it into mine.

They are usually plug and play... all the wiring and connectors are already there...

Then I would have a TACH, DIC, oil temperature, tranny temperature, nicer lighting on the cluster...etc..etc...

I may or may not have to make a quick trip to the dealer to get the additional features "TURNED ON" in the ECM, TCM and BCM.

This bulletin is being revised to add information for the 2009 model year and add new 2009 vehicles. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 07-08-49-020A (Section 08 -- Body & Accessories).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide a reference guide to help identify which season odometer programming method to use after replacing the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The three season odometer programming methods in use today are listed below. In addition, this reference guide lists the component where the season odometer value is stored. The season odometer value may be stored in the IPC, the Driver Information Center (DIC), or the Integrated Body Control Module (IBCM), also commonly called a Body Control Module (BCM).

Season Odometer Programming Methods In Use Today

IPC reprogramming and setup using the Service Programming System (SPS).

Odometer setup at the Electronic Service Center (ESC) when using an exchange IPC/DIC.

Tech2® -- The Tech2 is used to setup a replacement BCM, which includes loading the odometer value that is displayed and stored in the IPC. A replacement IPC will display the previously stored vehicle odometer value, communicated from the BCM, after cycling the ignition or driving the vehicle.

Sorry if I'm a little lost here, but what exactly does it mean when it says IPC for the Odometer Value Storage and ESC for the Odometer Programming Method, what exactly does that mean?

IPC is Instrument Panel Cluster

ESC is Electronic Service Center

It means that the mileage is stored in the Instrument panel cluster... and it is programmed... if necessary... thru the Electronic Service Center.
