Winged Allies

The P-51 Mustang has an interesting background. Although by the end of the war it was considered one of the best aircraft available, it didn't have a smooth start. Developed as a second-source to the P-40, whose production lines were maxed out, the P-51A used the Allison (General Motors) V-1710-39 liquid-cooled engine rated at 1200 hp; it had some innovative features but was not a game changer. The Allison V-1710-39 was also used in the Lightning, and was a good engine, but due to shortages did not receive a supercharger which limited high altitude performance.

When the P-51 got 'hotrodded' with a more powerful engine, the 2-stage supercharged 27 liter Rolls Royce Merlin 61 in the P-51B things changed and its performance, long range, firepower, and durability became famous. The P-51D used a Packard produced Merlin engine.

Mustangs were produced in California and here in Dallas, Texas.

The P51 is a beautiful fighter, I love how England the the US cooperated with eachother during the war

When I was a kid, the Wide World of Sports used to televise air races and most of the planes were P51s.. wow

There "used to be" a civilian registered P-51 terrorizing the skies over Texas. Maybe Bruce remembers reading about a Houston attorney who was also affiliated with a Dallas firm and the P-51 was his commuter toy. The operating cost per flight hour must have been horrendous.

Memory is telling me the aircraft suffered major damage when a hangar at Hobby was hit by hurricane winds many years ago.

The Spitfire shown here is a mk22 from late 1944, which had the more powerful Griffin motor unit, and the bubble canopy with the cropped edge's on the wings which made this one of the best war birds of ww2 . The early one's from the Battle of Britian 1940, had the Rolls Royce Merlin unit and , that were later fitted to the Mustang,. Both planes were Legends

"The Battle of France is over. The Battle of Britain is about to begin." Winston Churchill

Gotta love this:

The failure of Germany to achieve its objectives of destroying Britain's air defences, or forcing Britain to negotiate an armistice or an outright surrender, is considered its first major defeat and one of the crucial turning points in the war. If Germany had gained air superiority, Adolf Hitler might have launched Operation Sea Lion, an amphibious and airborne invasion of Britain..

How very true, we were lucky that we had Radar, which was then ground breaking . And R J Mitchell the designer of the Spitfire it only came into service just in time, and he never knew how he helped save us from going under, as he died before the Spitfire was in full service. And we must never forget the price both are Nations paid for freedom, both then and NOW/

I am so glad that there are people that remember the price that was paid for freedom. That saying Those Who Forget History Are Doomed to Repeat It was never so true with a president that does not know how to correctly answer a Japanese reporters question, telling them that dropping the Atom bomb on Japan in WW2 saved millions of lives but instead he evaded the issue weakly.

Thanks
