coolnesss
My 2002 ETC transmission has started to whine intermittently - and very very faintly in the past few days. I've noticed a funky shift a couple of times - just like some clunking - but only a couple of times in, say, 100 miles. There's no codes. The fluid is pink and smells perfect. It has almost 50k miles, and trans fluid was changed at 30k miles. It shifts flawlessly, apart from the funky shift a couple of times. No slipping whatsoever that I've noticed. Any opinions? Ranger
Are you sure it's the trans and not P/S or alternator, or maybe a pulley bearing?
BodybyFisher
From Service Manual Whine Noise Varying with RPM or Fluid Pressure DEFINITION: A high pitch whine which will intensify with engine RPM or which is Oil Pressure sensitive Oil Pump System Verify that the noise is internal to the oil pump during a preliminary oil pressure check. An increase in line pressure will vary an oil pump noise. By the way, if this is whine is related to vehicle speed, and not RPM, let me know there is another diagnosis in the manual for that.. coolnesss
Gentlemen, you were spot on - it was the alternator bearing. I had replaced the alternator about 6 months ago with a Delco from a GM distributor - it didn't last long. Hopefully this one will. I appreciate your help! BodybyFisher
I have seen alternators have a whine when they were rebuilt or new, I had one whine in my 96. I replaced the bearing and it went away. They use chinese bearings in some rebuilts, I used and SKF bearing and the whine was gone. It is amazing how noise is transmitted throughout the powertrain via the accessories. coolnesss
I took a 500 mile round trip road trip in her over the weekend, and it all worked flawlessly. Now I got a transmission mount to worry about. Hmmmm Thanks!
