Logan
Car is 2001 Deville. Toward the end of last summer....coolant got sort of hot. Not really hot...but hot enough to get your attention. A problem was noticed at the time (more on that in a minute..) and a new cap was installed on the surge tank. Car was fine all winter. Sure enough..as the the warm weather returned...so did the warmer-then-normal temp guage readings. A new purge / surge tank fixed the problem. The problem is very easy to miss until the tank lip is cleaned up. This fix really only applies to the 1998 and newer models with pressurized coolant purge tanks. It's been 6 weeks in warm weather with the new tank with no repeat issues...even with letting it idle...driving hard..and trying to get the car hot. Sort of like having a bad radiator cap. I bet a bunch of cars have been parked (overheating, head bolt fears) for this simple problem. See picture. Cracks in the coolant tank metal lip. These are pretty much hidden until the metal lip is cleaned up.
