You should change your coolant (glycol based) every 2-3 years.

You should also replace your thermostat! For one, they wear out (can't see that), but...

They also get broken.

That o-ring? It serves double duty sealing the hot from the cold side - it is also the seal that stops the housing from leaking (no gasket).

I didn't take that off BTW. It was so swollen, that when I pulled the t-stat out, it just fell off.

And yes, it came out in all those chunks - no dismantling required! Not good.

Does explain why it'd run at normal temp one time, then run cold the next.

They're cheap - replace them!

I've had one break..not in half like that but the s/s bracket broke away,and actually set a code. Can't remember what the code was but I thought what other car but a Cadillac would let you know when your thermo has gone south? :P
