BLue Boy
Howdy Folks, I have a 94 Deville that will not crank. Have repalced the battery and the starter. Only makes a clicking noise in the middle of the engine.Car was running fine two days ago IE no warning signs. Has a 4.9 non northstar. thanks for your help
Dr.Fiero
Can you put a socket on the crank, and turn the engine over? (just to eliminate seizure!) Are you still running side post terminals? They're notorious for getting corrosion under the bolt head. You never see it though, since it's hidden by the rubber booty. Grab a small flat blade, and run it under the bolt head around in a circle to 'fish' it out. Look at the terminal itself. Should be shiny copper. No green or powdery stuff. Battery bolts are like $3 each new - just replace them. Clean up both sides of the terminal until they shine. Smear some Noalox or Penatrox, or even never seize on the terminal (both sides), then slip the new bolt back into the rubber. Tighten them up (don't go nuts or you'll pull the threads out of the terminal!), and cross your fingers.
Dr.Fiero
Oh, as an aside... a 4.9 is a 4.9. Northstars are 4.6's
Ranger
Make sure corrosion has not gotten under the cable insulation. If it has, replace the cable.

BodybyFisher
Its fixed, the contacts on the security system that reads the resistor on the key were probably dirty or the resistor on the key was dirty. You didnt get any codes or messages related to the security system? BLue Boy
No codes at all. However the key will only work once sprayed,if you wait a few it won't. I don't think I want to carry a can of spray everywhere. So is it the key or the cylinder? Thanks

If this continues I can only imagine this is related to the contacts in the switch. There is a way to defeat this "resistor security" system by wiring in the correct size resistor if you want to. Someone here will chime in and let you know how, you will need an ohm meter to read the resistor on the key and you will need to buy the correct resistor from a Radio Shack and wire it in. Unless of course you want to replace the switch assembly Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
relaxitsonlyagame
Not sure if this will help much, but there is a "how to" on youtube entitled "Bypass GM Vats Security". Search it and watch it. It seems very straight-forward.
