92 4.9L Deville No Oil

Recommended Posts

My 4.9L 92 deville "Oil" Light is coming on at idle but goes off at any revs above idle. I know for sure Its not the sensor though because the valves arent getting oil and the lifters are starting to tap. First thing I did was take the filter off and cranked the motor to see if oil was being pumped to the oil filter adapter. It just puked out of where the filter was, so I assume the pump is ok? My manual says there is a valve in the oil filter adapter that either diverts some oil through the cooler when the oil is cool, or ALL of the oil to the cooler when its hot. I believe the filter is after the cooler in this circuit. So if I saw oil coming from where the filter mounts I shouldnt have a restriction in the cooler or anything causing low oil pressure should I? Do you think that valve in the oil filter adapter could be the cause of the oil issue? I'm reluctant to put a 90$ oil pump in only to have the enginge still starved of oil. Need an answer asap this is my commuter car. thanks in advance:-)

No coolant in the oil. I changed the oil and filter with penzoil 10w40 high mileage (the car has 175k). And a purolator pure one oil filter. I ran the engine for about 5 minutes and the oil pressure light wasnt on. The lifter noise was getting much quieter. after the 6th minute the lifter noise came back and the oil light came back on. Today I dropped the oil pan to look at the pump and there was plastic debris in the pick up screen, looked like an o ring or gasket or something. There was also what looked like a freeze plug only much smaller, maybe 5/8". I replaced the pump thinking some of that plastic junk got up in the pump. Im now just waiting for the permatex to dry a bit before I refill the engine and restart it. I disassembled the old pump and it looked, for the most part, ok. There was a score mark along the outer impeller and the pump housing. The pressure relief spring was a bit rusty and the valve didnt seem to be seating all the way, some oil dripped past the valve when I filled the galley. I dont know if this makes for a bad pump or what. I wont know for sure untill after I turn her over, but anyone else have any insight?

Oil pressure problems on the 4.9 are rare, this is the first we have heard of anything like this

Keep us up to date.

Not sure where the plastic is coming from. Timing gear?, does anyone know if the teeth on the timing gear on a 4.9 are plastic fiber?

It sounds like your pressure regulator valve was hanging up...

If you have pressure drop back down to 10W30, if that works in your vicinity given the ambient temps

Ok update. New pump is in and primed. I refilled with 10w40 and let err rip. I had about 4 minutes with no oil light and lifter noise dissipating. Then it started to come back and the oil light began to flicker, I turned the car off. I just put a new radiator in a little over a week ago, Im wondering if the oil cooler passages are becoming restricted, causing pressure at the pump to sky rocket and opening the bypass valve, therefore starving the engine of oil. I have a tech manual that the dealers used to use and I cant find a complete oil flow diagram in it. Only a short blurb about the partial bypass valve in the oil filter adapter. Tomorrow Im going to bypass the oil cooler and see if I still have pressure problems. Is it possible that something internal in the oil filter adapter is plugged or broken? I cant find a detailed photo or diagram of the thing in this book either.

You need to put a gage on it. I believe that the oil pump is driven by the distributor gear, you need to check the gear and that nothing is sheared...

THATS OUR HITLER! to quote The Producers. Ok so I haveto get behind the timing cover and timing gears to pop a new one in... Sounds straight forward enough. Thank you BBF!

I am sorry we were not aware of this, we have not run into this issue before. Good luck and let us know how this turns out. Thanks for sharing this with us, we may see this again

I wonder what caused the plug to become loose enough to fall out in the first place?

Havent gotten a chance too look at it yet, how long of a job am I looking at here? Its supposedly behind the camshaft timing gear. Also Im wondering why it came out too. Chances that the motor is ruined?

Ugh I cant get the crank pulley off. I put a puller on it and it hits the frame of the car before it pops free of the shaft. Do I have to pull the engine or something?

I'm not very familiar with the 4.9 powertrain but you might need to lower the cradle on the balancer side to gain some clearance. Another option would be to raise the engine slightly so the balancer clears the frame. Can you post a picture of the interference?
