suspension problems at high speed

Recommended Posts

I have a 2008 Escalade EXT. It has a great "Cadillac" ride until you get over 85mph. When traveling over 85 it feels like there are no shocks or a very loose ride. It happens at exactly 86mph and above. The service dept has taken off the running boards(thought it was lift like an airplane,Crazy), Changed out the wheels, Changed the shocks and a few other things. no codes are coming up per the tech. Just wanted to see if any ideas or simular problems.

Thanks

When you say very loose ride do you mean poor directional stability? Meaning the car drifts and you need to pay attention and constantly input steering corrections?

Or do you mean that the ride is bouncy?

Why that happens at 86 is very odd, maybe its some sort of harmonic. You say the struts were replaced, but didnt mention the tires. Is there vibration with this?

Does this happen every time?

Did the dealer experience this themselves?

Are there any other body parts that can cause sailing due to air turbulance? (spoilers, air dams, hood protectors, etc)

It happens every time. The truck is completely stock. The service tech and service advisor can feel it at any speed above 85. They put a different set of wheels and tires which did not help. After two weeks of them trying various "fixes" they want me to pick it up tomorrow and claim there is no fix.

Dumb question, have they felt this problem with other EXTs? Have they tried driving other EXTs that fast?

Do you know if the struts are electronically controlled?

They did drive 2 other o8 EXT's and no problem with those. The struts are electronically controlled and have been replaced. Since this bouncy problem only happens with speeds over 85mph GM will not offer any engineer help to the Cadillac dealer. I will try calling service assistance directly. Any ideas?

This is a hard problem to diagnose here so excuse me for asking so many questions, I am hoping that others are paying attention here also.

Typically, an electronic suspension will stiffen up above a certain speed for better feel of the road. If what you are feeling is a softening of the suspension, it would seem to me that the struts are being commanded to soften as if you were only driving 20 mph... Has GM put a TECH 2 on the system while doing 86 to see if the system is being commanded off or soft? Have they checked for suspension codes?, and intermittants?, and history codes?

Explain in more detail what happens, does the car physically bounce up and down? or is this a feeling of softness that suddenly occurs and the car feels unsafe or loose? Is this problem accompanied by any vibration?

Give us more detailed impressions

Have they looked the tires over for broken belts, scuffing or signs that the alignment is out?

This is a hard problem for them to WANT to diagnose as its at 86, I personally would be terrified at 86 in this type of vehicle given their propensity to roll if they get sideways. My neighbor has a Chevy Z71 which is the Chevy version and last month got a ticket doing 85 with 6 people in the car, and I was shocked she would go so fast.. If GM fixes your problem and they facilitate you going 86 plus, they could be liable as 86 is not legal. Its a touchy situation for them. I doubt a regional rep could or would help. I would think a TECH 2 would report oddities if it were electrical based.

I am going to second Body by Fisher's questions and ask a couple more.

My car also has the electrically controlled suspension.

It actually "FIRMS UP" and is firmer/harder riding at 90 than at 70.

I haven't noticed at "EXACTLY" what speed it firms up, it does it gradually as your speed increases.

I think mine starts getting more firm at about 75 or so.

Now a couple of a additional questions... :D

You said it feels "BOUNCY"...

Please elaborate and try to give a little better description.

Is it a "SOFT/LOOSE" bounce / pitch back and forth... like an old car with worn out shocks?

Or is it a really "HARD" bounce, like the shocks are too stiff and the tires have too much air in them making them really hard?

Just trying to get a better idea of the exact problem.

I know it is hard to convey the "FEEL" of the truck in words.

Based on the previous statements... my preliminary guess is... "ONE" of the computers is not giving the right data to the suspension.
