Mechanics

Hey everyone, was wondering if anyone knows of a Cadillac mechanic in the Northern Denver, Colorado area that will allow me to make payments on any work that is done. I know this is almost unheard of now adays so I am coming here to see if anyone knows of one. My Cadillac is mad at me... She's got cold weather hard starts and other things that need mended before she breaks bad. Being single with a mortgage and other mouths to feed in the house has my budget really tight. So any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

Sean

Why don't you check and post your DTC codes here and maybe we can help you at least get it running ok

Okay I have pulled codes and here is what I find :-/

P0131 02 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

P0137 02 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

P0151 02 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

P0171 System Too Lean Bank 1

P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2

B1910 Generator L - Terminal Open Circuit

B0533 Fuel Sensor Open/Shorted to B+

Obviously I need three 02 Sensors from the looks of it, I have a lean system and a bad Fuel sensor which could be throwing the lean codes? The generator (Alternator) was just replaced but as I said in a previous post not sure what brand it is. I know obvisouly buying new parts from a parts store is the way to go but I cannot afford at this time those brand new 02 sensors.

What's the difference Delco AFS109 and Delco AFS98 besides price I see they state the 1, 2, 3, position ?huh? I am not really a car guy just know how to piddle around with them.

The Fuel sensor open/shorted to B+ does that mean I need a new fuel sensor, or does this mean my fuel pump is going?

The Generator code i am at a loss for that because all seems like it is working fine car starts with 14 volts and hasn't dipped below 13 volts even with everything (radio, A/C\Heat) so I am not sure...

I also noticed a leak :`( on the drivers side towards the front of the engine bay (see I told ya I know enough to be dangerous lol) to which I assume it's either the water pump or Thermostat. Car keeps hollering at me to check coolant level so it's going somewhere! and I keep obliging checking and adding coolant as needed.

*Sigh* I am just at a loss for words.....

Thanks ALL!

You have a 97 correct?

Give us some time to digest this. While you might in fact need O2 sensors, the lean codes need to be fixed first as they can contribute to other codes.

You have a vacuum leak, a large one that affects both cylinders, start the engine, lift the hood and listen for an air sucking sound, pay attention to hoses 3/8" an inch in diameter and smaller, take the beauty cover off and listen while it idles looking for vacuum leaks. Look at the throttle body for leaks or sucking sounds. When did you change the fuel filter last? You should check fuel pressure also, by buying and hooking up a fuel pressure gage to the schrader valve.

It is possible that you need an alternator, how is she starting up?, battery strong?

I dont think that fuel sensor is serious to the operation of the vehicle, its probably the tank level sensor, is your fuel gage working?

Fill us in on what you find, others will chime in here, be patient here

Yes she's a 97, I will pull the beauty cover this evening when I got off work and listen for air sucking. I noticed one anight a while back when I had the hood up that when the gas peddle is pressed you can hear a sucking of air. Think that is normal right? I will have to find a fuel pressure gauge and try that. Other than really hard starts in the cold mornings after she warms up she starts like a champ! Haven't had the battery tested but will do that as well. Fuel filter has not been replaced that I know of. Bought the car in August and hasn't been done since I have had it. Fuel gauge works but half assed when I fill her she only takes on approx 13-16 gallons of fuel, and it fluctuates wildly when it gets to about 5 gallons (showing on the gauge) so that may be the issue with that.

BBF thanks for your assistance so far! It's greatly appreciated.

The engine being starved for gas will cause a lean code, if the fuel filter has not been changed, change it or have it changed that would not be too expensive. Slow/low delivery could be causing your morning start problems

See if you can get a gage on her to check the fuel pump pressure

We'll check the codes and chime in with ideas

Hi Sean,

Sensors are the messengers, i.e., "Don't shoot the messenger".

Regarding the OS codes:

Two easy to check items come to mind, that seem like common occurrences.

Leaking intake manifold, and leaking intake "duct" (neoprene plenum).

1. Remove the beauty cover

2. Using a 10 mm socket, tighten all of the intake manifold bolts; Do not over tighten. As you tighten the bolt, it will feel solid, when they are tightened properly.

3. Use a large screwdriver to tighten the clamp, on the intake manifold "duct" to the throttle body connection.

These fixes often will eliminate the lean condition.

Do the first two suggestions, clear the codes, and see if the codes return.

If the codes come back, the next thought is that the intake "duct" has a tear at he bottom; this also seems fairly common.

In this case the "duct"needs to be replaced. Not to hard to do for the average hobbyist.

If the "duct" needs replacing I can provide information on how to do this, or it should be a fairly inexpensive shop job.

The intake plenum is about $36. Intake manifold gaskets do not really need replacing, unless they get damaged when removing the intake manifold.

They also cost about $36 for the pair. I would allow about two hours for labor; could be less.

George, good advice on the intake bolts

Sean has a 97, I dont think there is an intake plenum on the 97

When do intake plenums start being used, does anyone know, I think 2001, but maybe 2000, not sure

Thanks for the info.

Thanks Jim, I know my 96 doesnt have it, and I am pretty similar to the 97... So the plenum begins being used in 2000, thanks

Okay folks, hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving!?!?!

So, I found the source of my water leak (replaced the water pump) which should have been a fairly easy job, if I am correct in reading the Haynes Manual :) took us 7 hours to figure out we had the wrong tool even though it was the right tool. Difference? about a 1/4 inch in the teeth of the removal tool length wise. Anyway that's been taken care of.

now on to codes:

I reset the codes (the PCM ones anyway) and I am getting these now:

P0131 02 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

P0151 02 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

I didn't reset these but will try that as well to see if they come back

B1910 Generator L - Terminal Open Circuit

B0533 Fuel Sensor Open/Shorted to B+

Funny thing now, I have noticed that the Service Engine Soon light comes on then after some time it goes off. Does the PCM reset itself like this? or am I just crazy?

Anything I should be looking for now? Also, I forgot to check for vaccuum leaks but I know there is one and will get that taken care of as soon as I can.

Thanks everyone for the assistance!!!

Okay, so since I have a post in here practically everyday I am not going to start a new thread for this issue!

Hope it's okay!

So I was on my way to work this morning and since I live in Colorado we have been locked up with a Canadian Cold blast, was 1 F when I pulled into the parking lot at work :)

I need to know how hard it is to replace the windshield washer pump. I have known that I have had an issue for some time but figured I'd be okay until it snowed and I'd have a little bit of time. WRONG!!!

Anyway the wipers work like they should so I know it's nothing of the mechanical features (I hope anyway) so I have narrowed it down to this little pump I can't hear it pumping the washer fluid when engaged so I assume it is bad. I will be purchasing one here in the next couple days but was wondering if anyone knows if this thing is hard to get at or maybe even some pictures of it being replaced?

Where it should be located, being as the book that I have covers most of the Cadillac's from the early 90's to the mid 00's and the engine they show as being mine looks NOTHING like mine :)

Thanks for any help that can be bestowed upon this poor sap and his failing Cadillac!
