1992 STS, 4.9L, Reliability?

Recommended Posts

was browsing the locals looking for parts cars to fix my '97 and came accross this '92. Its got 190,000 kms and had $6000 in work done less than 1000 kms ago. (2k in pain, 2k in trans). From what i can see so far i might be dissapointed in the performance difference going from a VIN 9 northstar to the 4.9. Am i wrong? At 190,000kms does this engine have much life left in it? Otherwise this car is absolutly immaculate, and can be had for less than 1500 canadian bucks. Hmm... I'm going to look at it this afternoon :)

While the 4.9 is no Northstar performance wise, it is no slouch and is one of Cadillacs most reliable engines.

so i went and checked it out, nice car!

$6000 invested.

2k in paint, 2k in trans, 2k in misc... brakes, lines, etc..

Car was originaly white. It is now salmon...... PINK!

There is paint ALL OVER the trim. In the weel wells. On the tires. On the EXHAUST!

They painted over the pin stripes. It looks like they used a freaking roller.

Car has 190,000 kms... *cough* 190,000 MILES. (hit the met/imp button, 315,000 km's)

Jerked the back wheels, they clunk pretty hard. Sway bar squeeks. Didnt bother checking the shocks.

Gotta say the engine ran like a champ. Not a single noise, and it fired up instantly. Very smooth. Im sure the car can be had for 800 bucks and will walk an e-test and safety.

But its pink!

That is a lot of miles but it sounds to be in good condition. What kind of tranny work?, the sprag can be a problem, if its been replaced/rebuilt that would be great

he said "new tranny". I'd have to check for bills. It kinda interests me cause i read some of the 4.9 turbo thread.

It might be worth jumping on for say 800 bucks (cndn), the guy said he'd go no less than 1000 but thats what i paid for mine and it has the N* 300hp, and just have my body guy repaint it the original white. He does very nice work. I donno, if my head gasket isnt gone thats about 1300 i could put back into my car.
