PS pump whine

my PS has whined for about 1yr now. fluid level is fine. I took off my PS pump to clean/inspect the blow off plate on my intake. it took about 10min to do it. quite easy. the fluid level is fine but i do not like the whine coming from the pump when i turn the wheel. I figure replacing the pump is the easiest or first step assuming the hoses are not plugged or restricted since replacing the rack is the last step?

Is the fluid foaming at all? Foaming fluid would indicate air being sucked in. Have you tried flushing the fluid out, also consider that there is a filter under the RF headlight, I wonder if that filter could be restricting fluid flow?

I suggest replacing the fluid with either GM part #89020661 mineral oil based power steering fluid or Valvoline SYNPOWER. Use a turkey baster to pull the fluid from the pump. Refill to proper level and drive for a week. Repeat the process.

I agree with JimD. I think there is a way to flush your power steering by removing the return line and directing it into a large can, and idle the engine, slowly turning the steering wheel from lock to lock while keeping the pump full.. Do a search, I have been wanting to do this myself

Often the pump whine is caused by the need of high pressure, to turn the wheels.

.Make sure your tires are properly inflated (32-35psi when COLD)

.Lube all of the front steering and suspension joints (dry joints bind)

I believe the PS line will be in the front of the AC condenser. It's a thin line. Just disconnect it when engine is running then quickly turn engine off when it's almost dry. I will come out pretty quickly. I don't think you will damage the PS pump as long as the engine is turned off right before the fluid is pumped out.

i had the pump off and drained it. not a lot came out. i did use the turkey baster method this last year. suck out an ounce, put in some. i added 1 quart of new fluid in 6 months time. no difference. the rack has a wired plug connection. not sure what that is for. the car is a 96 and does not have stabilitrak so i am not sure what the sensor? is measuring/monitoring.

When I had my '95 Eldorado I recall I read about "something" on the power steering line that was involved in that part of the Northstar system which was responsible for increasing power steering pressure at low RPMs and low speed. The idea was to reduce steering effort during parking maneuvers. I don't remember much more than that.

well it does have magnasteer. perhaps the bcm somehow controls a port on the oil line that varies the boost at varying road speeds to increase/decrease effort. i was thinking of disconnecting the connection to see if it affects the steering effort. i had a 97 pontiac gtp that had variable boost steering. seems to me if the sensor failed, it would default to high steering effort all the time. and that was how it felt. it never whined but was somewhat hard to steer. i have a 99 GT now and the steering effort is much easier.

With regard to the speed sensitive steering, when you make a fast zig zag move the system firms up the steering 'feel' so you dont over steer. If you have never experienced this, its quite amazing when it happens. I think that wire relays rotational speed to the BCM.
