MIke D
I have a bad intake cam on my 99 northstar... it's getting really annoying... has anyone ever swapped out a cam? Did you have to drop the engine to do it? Cop didn't see it, I didn't do it! 93 STS 225,000 Miles 99 STS 111,000 Miles

MIke D
#1 cylinder intake. running compression. it;s about 10% lower than the rest but the static compression is fine. This all goes back to my stumble that i have been having for over a year. This all goes back to my stumble that i have been having for over a year. What makes you think its a CAM and not a valve problem? Find Growe3 (I think its 3), George's thread on his burned valve, or send him a PM and ask him what his symptoms were. My guess is that he had a miss, but a valve seating poorly cold drop your compression. While you are at it, look at Ken's thread on OVERDRIVE, he is getting a fishbite plus dropping out of OD. I wonder if this fishbite is the OD band slipping? However, that would not be your issue as you are chasing a low compression issue.. By the way, to avoid me from having to look up which bank #1 is, is it the front or rear bank? MIke D
rear.... The reason we think it's the cam is because the static compression is fine... it's just not opening the valve far enough to get a full fuel air charge so it leaves residual fuel in the intake.. sometimes this will cause a stack fire other times it causes the other cylinders to run rich. it is also an rpm and not a gear problem... below 2500 it is more pronounced above that it's smooth. I also know it's not the OD because it will do it sitting in park or at the light in drive. has anyone ever swapped out the cam? do you have to drop the engine so you can get at the timing belt? Cop didn't see it, I didn't do it! 93 STS 225,000 Miles 99 STS 111,000 Miles
BodybyFisher
Timing chains Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
jlinde
If you lock the crank so it can't turn and then take the valve cover off and mount the cam gear for the faulty cam very hard with bolts and nuts and wires to keep it in exactly the same position and loosen the big cam nut. Here is the difficult part -the cam chain tensioner down in the dark may NOT change position as this means the loosened cam gear will be out of wack compared to the rest of the engine. If the cam gear stays in position it is just to take the cam away and put in the new and torque the big nut again and you are done. This is just theory - I have time-serted a couple of Northstars but I had them all out of the engine compartment. But I am afraid that the hydraulic chain tensioner will make this difficult for you. /Jan L
MIke D
That is what i had thought... I'll probably just live with it for now. Thanks though. Cop didn't see it, I didn't do it! 93 STS 225,000 Miles 99 STS 111,000 Miles
KHE
Why not pull the timing cover and activate the release lever on the appropriate tensioner and then insert a pin in the lever to keep it released?
