Exhaust Manifold Oxygen Sensor

MAC

Recommended Posts

I bought a new oxygen sensor and I tried to remove it but it was really on there. Just wondering if anyone has replaced the exhaust manifold sensor and what did you do to remove it? Was it just a matter of using WD40, PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench and working on it until it breaks loose or did you apply heat to it?

I have replaced three so far with no problems. I used the proper O2 sensor socket, warmed the car up, and used an 18" breaker bar. I have replaced the pre-cat on 2 96's, and both banks. I think its necessary to warm the car up, it helps, Mike

I didn't know there was a special socket. Thanks for the info! I'll buy the socket to save the aggravation and get it done right. I'm not going to mess around with it.

Oh yea, it makes a big difference, see this link mine looks like the Lisle 12100 and the KD at the bottom. It allows the electric lead to ride up to the top because of the slit in the side of the socket. It should come out like butter... Good Luck

I've tried a couple times to change my rear o2 sensor, and it's up against the metal heater core lines. I have a 20" extension bar and just got an 18" flex ratchet/breaker bar so I'm going to give it another shot soon.

I've read on the forum here that heating the car to 120 degrees or so is supposed to help a lot. I also read of one person, not sure who, that used PB Blaster on it as well, so that might be an option too.

WARNING: I'm a total car newbie, don't be surprised if I ask a stupid question! Just trying to learn.

Cheers!

Just to follow-up. I replaced my O2 sensor. I bought the special O2 sensor socket at PepBoys for about $11. I was surprised a bit when the sensor came off pretty easily. I was thinking it was fused in and expected a hassle. I replaced it with an ACDelco and all is well. I was getting the P013 code and then the P046 code showed up. I've been driving now for a week with the new sensor and so far no more codes.

P013 (E013) Right Oxygen Sensor Not Ready

P046 (E046) Right to Left Bank Fueling Difference

Hey thats great. Did you warm up the engine before you did it? With the correct socket and a breaker bar it comes right off, I think some have had more difficulty with the plugs,

Do you feel a difference in performance?

Yes, I warmed the engine to about 120 degrees. With the socket it came of pretty easy--I was a bit surprised. As far as performance, I noticed a slight pickup in performance, though it's nothing major. Again, thanks for the info about there being a socket to do the job. I've been wanting to replace the O2 sensor for at least 6 months and I finally got to it.

I still have the original sensor. Is it possible to clean it or should I throw it away?
