Have your coolant checked for the presence of combustion gases. If they are present it means pulled head bolts.

Bring the car back to whomever you bought it from and get your money back.

Otherwise:

You will either have to have that engine block Timeserted or have a reman motor installed. IF you choose to install a used motor be sure to have it Timeserted or you will be facing the same problem soon after.

RANGER, Please read this (you had a 1999?)

Lets not assume the WORST yet, that you need a head gasket. Now you MIGHT, but lets not go there till simple causes are looked at.

I was just looking at the 1999 service manual, your cooling system is different than mine, but I am sure you have a bleed line, its referred to as the coolant return line. The surge tank on your car is located on the drivers side of the car according to the manual.

Since the radiator is new, lets assume that the old radiator was LEAKING. To bide some time, someone might have put cooling system sealer in. It is possible that, the sealer clogged the bleed line. If the bleed line is clogged AIR will not escape the cooling system, and your water pump will cavitate, negatively affecting coolant circulation.

The only problem is, it appears that your cooling system is different than mine, its possible that the "bolt with a hole in it" or metering orfice, is part of the surge tank nipple. The hose that attaches to your surge tank, goes directly to the throttle body pre-heat circuit on your car. When you pull the hose off, look at the nipple on the surge tank and see if its clogged. Put the hose on, start the car and let it idle (cool not hot), pull the hose off the tank, you should get coolant flow coming out. Do you get coolant out of that coolant return line that you pull off the surge tank?

Can someone confirm where the "bolt with a hole in it" is on the 1999 is it an integral part of the tank?. Here is the photo of the 1999 surge tank.

If this checks out OK, change your thermostat, make sure your coolant concentration is 50/50,

Check your water pump belt for fraying, missing sections and for it being shiny indicating that it is slipping, it is located on the driverside front of the engine, it is NOT the big serpentine belt, its a tiny belt.

The action of your cooling fans is normal, they run 100% of the time when the AC is on, if the AC is off, they don't run until the coolant temp reaches +228 degrees and they turn off about 217.

Check your surge tank cap, if it looks old, replace it.

IF you have a LIMITED time to take the car back, do the combustion test FIRST, to quickly eliminate a serious problem and get it back to them FAST.

just had headgasket test done today, thank god free of head gasket problem for now. replaced thermostat today, trying to bleed now. need some info on bleeding. my mechanic said to sun it til it gets hot, then let sit for 30 min then open resevior repeat for two hours not losing any coolant in resevior but still climbs to about 3/4. thanks for the info this sight is really helpful

There is NO special process for bleeding the system. I sent Ranger a message and asked him to stop by and comment on your 99, he had a 99, I am not sure where the bleeder metering orfice is in your engine. Someone will stop by, have patience. Mike

Sorry guys, haven't been here in a few days and just got Mikes PM. Never had any problems with my daughters '99 so I'm not sure. I believe it it the same as all others, just on a different side. If you have no coolant flow from the purge line (at the tank) when removed, then follow it back, locate and clear the blockage.

Thanks for poppin in on this Ranger. The print I posted is not familiar to me...mine is different, and I don't see the 'bolt with a hole in it"

Could someone familiar with a 99 solve this
