Now I MIGHT be wrong, because, I might be confusing that with having to replace the AC temp actuator which I did around the same time. But if you need to remove the pass side air bag, be careful with it. catmendo
thanks BBF, i hate to keep troubling you so ... my book doesn't cover dash removal and if you could, please scan what your manual says because i am feeling alittle uneasy now that you have mentioned possible pass. air bag removal ... i am not afraid of the bag just afraid that i don't know enough of the dash removal prosess... or just read what your book says and shout back if it says airbag removal required ... i am now going to try and google up 96 cat dash removal to try to save you some trouble and as snuffy smith once said to his wive louise "you are gooder, than an angle" ... thanks BBF !!! BodybyFisher
In the photo I posted above of the dash pad, look at the small insert with #10, the tab is on the SIDE of the vents, use a thin puddy knife, like one inch wide.. catmendo
alright !!! i got the dash pad out and i could not have gotten it out without bodybyfishers help and patience and Bruce for having this site ...the measly $20.00 that i spend to become a supporter was money well spent ... when i get done with BBF's fix then i will have spent $5.00 or less to have my dash fixed ... can you just imagine what a stealership would have charged me ??? so come on some of you guys, step up and support the cause ... i am now going to try to list some off the things that may be helpful to next guy to try this fix ... i used a screwdriver with a 1/4 inch drive on the end of it with a 7mm deep socket on the end of it to remove the 7 fasteners that retain the dash pad ... a deep socket isn't necessary but it helped me by making my screwdriver longer ... there are tabs on either side of vents and i took a 2 inch safety pin and straightened it out, i then bent the end of the pin about 1/16 of an inch at the end to an 90 degree angle and it worked like a charm ... once i had a tab lifted i would insert a tooth pick under the lifted tabs to hold them open until i removed the vents ... a dental pick would probably work about as well as my homemade tool ... i broke the first tab because i tried to use a thin bladed screwdriver and decided to make the tool ... if you have a speaker in the middle of you dash as i do then you will need to disconnect it as soon as you get the dash lifted before you can remove it ... i don't remember seeing anything about that in the instructions ??? if you don't own, one of those LED lights that you strap on your forehead buy one, they are cheap and i don't think that i would have found the release tabs, without it and BBF's help too, of course... a regular flash light just didn't cut it ... thanks everybody and special thanks to Bruce and extra special thanks to Mike ... and, if i think of anything more, that would help the next guy, i will post it ... Lane p.s. i love the the edit feature, that you get as a supporter... and, i see can alot of people posting here, that need to step up ... shame on you ... i am now, a supporter and i am not going to give you my best unless you step up ... i can tell you how to jet and sync. or rebuild, 3 40 mm. weber carbs., su's, Stromburgs etc. on a sports car, boat or whatever ... i'm old school ... step up guys ... support the cause ... jeez $20. bucks ... i just saved hundreds on my dash fix ... wake up guys ... BodybyFisher
I looked at my dash repair yesterday and it still looks great. Use the same adhesive stuff, I used in my other post, clean it up good, figure out how to clamp it, I used a piece of wood and clamps and did ONE SIDE at a time with the clamps through the speaker hole. Try not to use too much pressure clamping it down and let it sit the required amount of time.. catmendo
BBF, i played with my dash some tonight ... cleaning up the surfaces where i will be gluing it and playing with my clamps placements ... i have three of those plastic ratcheting type and my big c-clamp that i bought years ago for retracting the piston on disc brakes and concluded that it would take me three days of clamping to get it done and i don't think it would bond as well as if i did it all at once because, if i do it in three stages, i am not going to be able to get the glue into all the nooks and crannies ...none of my clamp really cut it because they are not deep enough ... instead, my best friend is coming to Columbia on June 5th or before and he is a big time wood worker and he will bring a dozen of his clamp that open up 14 inches and have a depth of 8 inches or more and i will glue it all in one go ... that seems like the best plan to me after studying what i have ... i am not in a hurry, and i will wait for him and the clamps ... during the mean while i am going to think about cutting a piece of plywood that would go in front of the air outlet vents and around the speaker so that only one piece of wood would be involved on the top of the dash ... i will try to take a picture, it should look interesting ... also, i will see what he has in small c-clamps for the radio speaker area ...i think 4 big clamps and two small clamps would do what i need to do nicely Cat men do

Lane OK, you are a supporter so you can attach up to a 100KB picture. Look below this window and you will see attachents, select a file, click the browse button, and find the file on your computer and click upload. Then click add reply after you have finished writing your message. Or, you can get a photobucket account, upload the photos there, and link them here, use the picture link, click it, and then paste it here.. I like doing it that way, the whole picture is displayed and it makes it easy to see the photo in my posts.. As they say every picture tells a story, I think pictures help illustrate something you are trying to relay. Whereas ATTACHING a file using this boards upload creates a small icon of a photo that you must click on. After a while Bruce will PRUNE old photos and they are lost, which really hampers old threads (but Bruce does this to keep the size of the database down, correct me if I am wrong Bruce), so I feel linking them is a better way to go. Linking also helps keep Bruces/Caddyinfo's bandwidth down which translates into a cost savings if I am not mistaken. Is that true Bruce? catmendo
You should rename this thread dash pad or something that leads you to dash pads for search reasons aka, BBF ... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i have, tried to do so, and i have yet, been able to do so, any ideas ??? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ and, as for for what i am trying to do now with my dash pad is, i am trying, to magnetize my 6mm socket, for the replacement of my dash bolts/screws because, i had problems while taking out the screws/bolts, only to have them fall out of my socket and darn near, disappear inside my dash and i have been trying to do what i have done many times before, rubbing a screw driver or socket on a magnet and make it magnetized ... but so far, i am having no luck and that is strange to me... because they are both magnetic ??? for they are both are attracted to a magnet, and since, i was not/am having any luck with the socket and thought, that i could do the bolts instead ??? but no luck either way so far ??? and, bear in mind, that this is something, that i have done, many times before with screw drivers ... any ideas, here guys ??? should i keep rubbing the socket, on the speaker magnet ??? and that is, what, my brain, keeps telling me to do so ... because, i have never had a problem, doing this before ??? i am, kind of smart and if push comes to shove, i will melt some wax and dip my socket in it, an insert the bolts and be good to go ... and hello, i just came up with that idea in the last 30 seconds ... and note that is not, to bad a thought for some one, that hasn't slept for more hours, in the last week, than what most folks sleep in a night ...
