I know what you mean, there have been times that I have wanted to magnetize a socket to hold a screw or bolt in place. Are you talking about the three screwed up by the defroster vent?

no, it was the ones in the lower vents .. they came out easy enough, but two out of the 4, fell out of the socket before i could extract them ... and that is stange, because they are at an upward 45 degree angle or more, and you would not think, that it would not have been a prob. "but experence tells few lies (Lane)"

my brain says, it wont be a problem on the reinstall but, if i can insure that it won't be a pain on replacing them

by using some forethought, then i will take some preventive measures ...

and the the upper vent bolts, will be the ones most likely to fall out because of their downward angle, but if i remember right they have no place to go as in they can not fall inside of the dash ...

i have a pencil type magnet, that i think that i can use to start them all, but magnetising screw drivers and sockets by rubbing them on a mag. has never failed me ...

i have been playing some and know that i can stick a mag. on the outside of the socket and i am good to go , remember, that i am using a deep socket because it helps in the reach ...

no prob. and i will work it out and i am loving the idea of make am electro magnet to play with ...

i don't think that i have done that since i was a preteen ...

and, as i said, i can do it with melted wax ...

i love, coming up with an original idea and being a crazy mech. is an easy way to do it ...

hey, what the heck, the odds of me making a better computer processor are zero ...

but, have you ever heard, of anyone saying use melted wax to hold a bolt/nut in place ???

silicone would work, but wax dries about as fast, as you can blow on it and we won't even

go into ice or ice water ...

I do those types of things also, I have held screws in place with sticky substances (puddy, gum, etc). I have even bought a really long pair of needle nose pliers for that purpose, I think they are 9 inches long, they are always coming in handy.

Check out these neodymium magnets, I have bought a few, and they are incredibly strong. They are sick, I have accidently let two attach to each other and its impossible to pull the apart, god help you if your fingers are between them, and they are the size of nickels.. amazing If these wont magnetize your tools NOTHING will..

nice needle nose ... sometimes when i use needle nose pliers i take a big rubber band and wrap it around the handle area to hold what i am trying to hold and it really helps sometimes ... i also keep several sizes of hospital

forceps in the tool box they can be real handy at times esp. if you drop something in a very tight place or

want something like a washer or the like that if you drop it, it will fall down inside the motor ...

Mike, if you get a chance, see the cup holder thread since you have a 97 and should know the answer, to my post there ...

thanks Mike... Lane

p.s. how are DQ 10 speakers coming along ???

i read somewhere about a spk. foam repair place in Jersy ...

YES!, I have used rubber bands also, excellent. I have a 96, Ill look to see if I can help. And YES, my friend worked as a nurse in a hospital and I have about 15 pairs of clamps and scissors in different sized and angles, they area great since you can lock them.

I am dying here, what happened to the dash pad, how did the glue job come out?

I have been meaning to tell you they ended up not being Dq-10s, the are a Dahlquist DQM-907, still a very good speaker and I am having them reconed by the Dahlquist factory here on Long Island and buying high performance caps. These speakers rival my B&W DM2000's and surpass them in many ways. But I do love my B&W 2000's. Go to B&W and order their DVD on the 800 series and any other DVDs they have to be truely awed..

OK, back on track how is that dash pad coming, you are keeping me in suspense. You are gaining weight on this job  Less planning and more wrenching... :D

"OK, back on track how is that dash pad coming, you are keeping me in suspense. You are gaining weight on this job, Less planning and more wrenching"...

so said.... by BBF/Mike ... et al ....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

thanks, Mike ...you made me laugh ...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMHO ... it looks darn good ... but, there is shrinkage, on one side of the dash, so the radio/air vent cover

has a 1/4 inch gap at worst, on the drivers side ... WTF, i just saved $500.00 ... thanks to you sir ... et al ...

and note, that my wooden hold down, was longer on one side, than the other side...

and, i bought this car, with a curled up dash, and it had been that way for awhile, before i bought it,

and keep in mind that i bought this car from a friend, that i knew put tons of interstate driving on, it after buying

it from, an old man, that had old timers disease (it's late and i can't spell alt. dis. at the moment) ...

that, the senior, bought new ... and, if you look in my caddy owners manual, it states, that the avg. new caddy owner, is 65 year old ...

no one, would notice the difference in my fix, but me ...

i did find it, interesting that there was no sign of clamping on one side, while on the other side, the one that was the worst, it showed because, i clamped down on it with a real cause ... i doubt, that there will remain, any evidents of it, but, i will look tomorrow and report back to you, and i know, in the back of my brain, that it will disappear as it did in your dash pad fix ...

and, as i have told you before, i dare it, to need time certs and if it does, and if, i have to drop the cradle, i will build it like a N* sand buggy, but what i did not tell you was, i will build a buggy/street rod that will stand on it's back tires and you know, as well as i do, that if i buy a buggy frame and build it, i would not have to build the eng. at all, for it to stand on it's back tires ... we are not talking knobbies here... we are talking about fat radials on the back ...

think about it Mike ... what, is the baddest ride, that you ever had ???

i can build, a sweet, lightweight toy, that would get crazy gas mileage, for what might be very little bucks ...

i paid a $1,000 for this car and except for getting screwed, by the S.C. tax comm. , i am, making out like a bandit ...

they say it is worth $5,300 and yes, i would be glad to pay the tax on that if, you can guarantee me, that i have no head issues ...

and if it does, it ain't worth much, if you can't turn a wrench or two, like me ...

I had evidence of the clamping on mine that eventually went away. Once the sun hits it I think the vinyl will become pliable and level out. Hey you gotta admit that it looks better now than it did, I am very happy with mine, it was an eye sore that passengers would comment on.

I didn't know you had a Concours till just now. The guy who sold me my 96 FOUND a 1996 Cadillac VCR tape detailing its features. Its very interesting I just got it in the mail last week. I am going to try to put it on DVD at some point. I would have loved to have a Concours, Ill bet it feels great on the highway. H-rated or Z-rated tires?, didn't the Concours have z-rated tires? You have the 300 hp powertrain same as the STS and ETC...nice

Have you seen this?

http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

Have you gotten an ADOBE PDF copy of your owners manual yet? If not go to this site, download your manual. Call it up in Adobe Reader, most everybody has Reader but if your don't have Adobe Reader you can download it here. >> http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/read...l?promoid=BUIGO Don't install the google tool bar (uncheck)

Then you can open your manual, and do searches with reader when you need to find something. Read the section on cruise control, if you are not an advanced user of the cruise control, when I read that section I learned a lot. I use it contantly now, now that I have more control over my speed with it. Great for good gas mileage. I love it for highway driving and when I know the area is heavily patrolled by police for speeding like down the shore, so I just set it. It tends to bother the people behind me when the limit is 40 and I do EXACTLY 42 because of the cruise control, the best was, a guy who was really po'd at my constant speed (slow and steady at 42) blew by me, and a cop was sitting HIDDEN exactly where I knew he was and he immediately nailed the guy within my view,. I am stunned at how tough the cops are about speeding, unsuspecting visitors to Mantoloking are caught immediately.

With these big birds its very easy to seriously exceed the speed limit..

thanks, i will check out your reads and you might enjoy this link, that i found while looking for your magnets ...

http://www.permanentmagnet.com/

i assume, that my cat is z rated, because my buddy that i bought it from, complains about the 2004 that

he bought to replace it, has a limiter that cuts in at 112 mph while mine, his old one did 130 mph ...

how do i check it ??? on the drivers door, as to tire rating ???

why don't you like the google tool bar ??? after threatening to buy a new puter for years, i bought a new

one from wal- mart online, at the begining of this year ... a dell 1531 with a 22 inch flat screen and it rocks ... $863.000 after tax and shipping to my door ... and it's, oh so sweet ...

if puters were cars, then it is a cadillac and i am using the google tool bar on it, after never having used the GTB before and it is my probably my favorite feature after the 22 inch screen of course ...

i am now, going to do a search on your speakers ...

I don't like anything that steals my CPU cycles by spying on my browsing habits, sending info, etc. I don't like anything that bogs down my computer by installing itself because they are memory resident programs my RAM takes a hit. Finally I don't like Googles politics. I have built about 500 computers, I get many calls to see what is bogging down peoples computers and its amazing how many SEARCH BARS, etc people have loaded. I believe that even when these parisites are removed, there is still garbage running in the background. I install NOTHING if I can help it but the programs I need. There is nothing worse than a FAT computer (either operating system or loaded memory resident junk).

One of the reasons I love my Cadillac is because of the computers

i think i know what you mean ... i have been trying to get rid of a game that i loaded called steam and a regular delete just don't cut it ...

and last night my puter said there is a flash 8.0 update do you want to install it and i said what the heck and did it ...

big mistake, when i fired up the puter this morning, it would do nothing until i uninstalled it ...

i am not a puter whiz by a long shot ... and i call in my troops when it becomes a prob. ...

thanks Mike, i checked out your motorera link ...

i didn't know this ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additionally, all front-drive Cadillacs featured an ignition key anti-lockout feature that protected the driver from accidental lockout by disabling the driver's power door lock if the key was left in the ignition.

But if you get stupid and in a hurry at the same time.....

You are taking your keys from the ignition... you are unplugging your cell phone from the charger... while picking up your clipboard and the cell phone rings.

Your keys CAN get laid down on the console for just a second while you answer the phone....

then you get out...

forgeting that you laid down your keys...

hit the auto door lock and close the door...

just as it closes...

you realize where your keys are.

JUST as you touch the door handle to open the door... it locks.

THATS when it is a GOOD THING that you have OnStar programmed into your cell phone.

Of course ... "I" .... would NEVER do such a dumb thing...

But I HEARD about someone who did just exactly THAT. :D:D:D:D

thanks Tex, good one ... i usually don't laugh out loud ...

the stupidest thing, that i have done so far on my fat cat is ...

i left my keys in the ign. , in the on position, at the golf course

and hours later, when i went to go home, i saw what i had done and freaked and

kind of tried to snatch the keys out of the ign. bad mistake for the next few weeks i was forced to look at a security/thief warning that said, warning sec. prob. the car may not start ..

i finally, figured out, that if i disconnect the batt. and would go away ...

some, of my best, belly laughs, come from laughing at my *******...
