High Idle

Recommended Posts

Ok when I start my car up it idle up real high I mean the rpm hand goes so far over that I think that my car is just gonna take off in park, and the only way to stop the high idle is to cut the car back off. I just replaced my spark plugs and wires and after that it started doing the high idle thing. Can some one please help me I am so tired of doing so much to this car!

Clean the throttle body throat and plate, especially the edges of the plate and where the plate hits the throat walls. Take the screws out of the IAC and clean the round pindle and the passages in the TB where it sits. See if that helps.

If you're working on the '93, it will have an Idle Speed Control motor instead of an IAC. Its a motor with a plunger that pushes on the throttle linkage arm to adjust the idle.

The ISC motors are known to fail and high idles are the usual symptom. They come and go - at first.

As BBF said, clean the throttle body well. A build-up of soot on the walls of the throttle body and/or on the throttle plate can cause the throttle plate to stick open, resulting in a high idle. That could be the cause and you'll want to rule it out.

There are some other possibilities, such as a vacuum leak. But my guess would be that your ISC motor is in the early stages of failing.

Actually I believe the official name is the Idle Speed Control Actuator. I just replaced one on a 94 Eldorado (not mine) and it worked to stop erratic idling. Be aware that you will need either an 8mm combination wrench or 5/16-inch combo wrench. You can't get at all 3 nuts to remove the Actuator with a socket. Also, make sure it's a combination wrench with one side being closed-ended and the other open, which will provide flexibility as far as getting at the nuts, particularly the one on the bottom closer to the fire wall.

  • 1 year later...

I joined TODAY, for this same problem. My car sat for a few years, before I bought it, and needed some major brake work. When it came back from my usual garage, the idle was jacked up.
