over heated today

well i was headin up a big hill today and over heated today. i pulled off the road and let her cool down a lil. the system blew all the steam out, which was good cause it cleaned a lil oil off the chassis in the process. hehe. i called AAA, but they take forever, and lucky for me a free highway roadside service saw me with the hood up and hooked up some water for the resevior. at that time she was cooled down, and i was on my way. i also called to cancel the tow truck. the rest of the drive was just fine.

i have a new themostat and upper radiator hose that i will install this week on tuesday. there looked to be a lil bit of floating gunk in the radiator resevior, so i will flush the system as well for it will be 1/2 empty from themostat change anyways. Whats the best coolant to run??? i have been using havoline dex-cool for top offs, hows that stuff??? the roadside serivce guy said the red stuff is bunk and should use green stuff, but i dont think that is dex cool.

Green is not Dex. Your car came with Dex. I would stick with it. The "gunk" you saw was likely sealant tab residue. Nothing to be alarmed about.

There is a problem with going "orange" with a used car. You simply don't know if the green stuff was ever in there. It might have been. There's no telling what a previous mechanic might have done.

You see, green and orange can never be mixed and once you've gone "green" you can never go "orange" again, absent a very, very thorough coolant system cleaning.

If you purchase a used Cadillac whose service history you are not completely, absolutely certain of, put the green stuff in it and change it every two years. PERIOD.

There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises

You can switch back to DexCool - you will need to drain and refill every two years though as the silicates from the green coolant will deplete the corrosion inhibitors in the DexCool. DexCool does not have abrasive silicates which shorten water pump seal life.
