BodybyFisher
Howyadoin, I don't know this guy, but it seems like he's quite adamant about collecting a bunch of VIN numbers and ECM service numbers, almost to the point of ranting. It seems a bit odd to be demanding that kind of information without having the person's hardware. Almost seems akin to the guys that troll for e-mail addresses in newsgroups by offering something free, "just give me your addy and I'll send it to ya". Then there are a raft of "Me too" posts to the group with email addresses. It's a bit creepy, IMHO. Is there anything that could be done with a Tech 2 to a car using a different VIN and service number? Changing mileage in the IPC or something? You know, I was thinking the same thing, why would a VIN number be needed? It didnt make sense to me at all. OynxSTS
I think he needs the VIN since, at least as I have been lead to believe, on these cars the ECM talks to the BCM, the radio, the security system, the door module, etc... On the ODBII cars all of these modules talking over the serial bus and they actively check each others "vehicle id key" If one doesnt match then you have issues. That's why you can swap in an ECM from a non speed limited car into an "H" rated car and eliminate your "limit" Easin' down the highway in a new Cadillac, I had a fine fox in front, I had three more in the back ZZTOP, I'm Bad I'm Nationwide Greg
