Lots of codes! No radio/nav! HELP!

Recommended Posts

Have you anything new to report wrt your navigation/radio system. I have done a little more digging into the service manual and I have a few other ideas. You might want to try this. If you push and hold the note key on the left of the unit ie. hard key, a key pad will show up. Punch in 1971 which is a diagnostic code and try going from there. Also, were the messages you received regarding Preparing to load system software etc., showing up on the DIC or on the screen of the navigation unit. One more thought is the cd player in the console. This unit is obviously tied in with the radio. Try taking out the cd holder, removing any cd's and putting it back in. Seems far fetched but is worth a try.

Nothing new to report. I've tried holding the note button and nothing happens. Those messages about the software were showing up on the actual navigation. I'll try taking out the cd's later and see what happens. Thanks!

I took all the CD's out and I also tried the note thing again. Neither one did anything. Thanks anyway! I have an appointment at the dealership for 10:15 tomorrow morning. Hopefully they don't kill me with the cost of fixing it.

It's at the dealership right now and I just called them and the guy is still trying to figure it out. He thinks that it go shorted somehow. I was thinking something, wouldn't it not work at all if it was shorted?

Got it back from the dealer, they say I need to replace the nav. :( $1200 I believe it's something else though. I was reading around the internet and it sounds like you can buy a cd for reprogramming it. I bought a service manual and it came with all the tsb's and one of them was a blank nav screen and they had the part number for the cd to reprogram it. It was only $10 from gmpartsdirect.com, so I bought it and I'm going to try it out.

Hey, just noticed something else. My buzzer/dinger thing also doesn't work. I have the door open with the key in or use the parking assist and I never get a "ding." Is the "ding" integrated with the radio or a seperate thing?

Thanks for the info! So I don't have the buzzer because of the nav not working...nice. I found a nav unit that came from an 02 deville on ebay for $300. He said it had bose and will fit a 02 seville also. The only difference is that mine says bose on the lower left corner and his doesn't. Do you think that would be the same?

Yes it will be the same but don't forget that it will have a theft lock so you will have to go to the dealer to unlock it and set it up with your vin #. Tech II required. Have you considered getting a second opinion wrt the unit being faulty. It is rare for one of these units to quit especially if only because of a dead battery. Doesn't sound right to me.

I'm not sure who else to go to. None of the other GM dealers want to touch it because it's a cadillac and their isn't another cadillac dealer in town. I haven't checked with the GMC dealer yet though, maybe he could help.

I'm going to wait for that software disk though. I'm going to see if I can fix it on my own first. I asked the dealer the other day if they can reset the theft lock and he said, "huh?" How come he didn't know what the heck I was talking about?

GMpartsdirect e-mailed me and said that they software cd is no longer made. So I called my dealer and said that I suppose I'll have to buy one. They ordered one with some company for about $1200. Then they called back and said since it's a canadian one the people they ordered it from will need to try to fix it instead. So hopefully it will end up being cheaper. I'm taking it in tomorrow to get it taken out so they can send it in.

Patience.... Have your battery load tested... these batteries can go bad quickly make sure its fully charged and load tests good....

I bought a battery load tester at Harbor Freight for about $15.00 - it's a great investment! A lot of us - especially old timers - don't really appreciate the spohistication of modern electronics and try to get extra life out of a weak battery like we used to. That was fine in the days when most of what the battery did was drive the crank and spark but that's just not the case now. Modern cars are very ground sensitive as well - this is well documented here at the forum!

I learned this partly because my water sports toys are VERY sensitive to full charge conditions and give you all sorts of problems if not in a 100% state.

Tell me about it! Cadillacs spaz out when the battery is dead!

A little update...again.

On cadillacforums.com, someone mentioned that it's bricked and since my dealer doesn't have that data disk that I've been trying to get ahold of, I have to get a new one. That got me thinking...I checked my TSB for the "blank Nav screen" and checked the part number of the navs that can be updated. I then pulled my navigation and the part numbers matched, so now I know I can program it. I called my local dealers parts counter and gave them the part number for the data disk and he said that he'd have to order it. I told him that gmpartsdirect said it was discontinued and he confirmed it was. Then he gave me a list of dealers in the US that have that matching part number. I called the closest one (brookfield, WI) and they are now sending it to me! I hope this disc will work. I'm thinking it will, but we'll find out in a few days. I'm going to call and check how they are shipping it to see when it will get here.

ON EDIT: Just called them and they said they're shipping it UPS. It will probably be here Monday then...maybe Friday. I can't wait! It sucks not having sound!

If anyone has any troubles, just let me know. I can make a copy and send it to them. It works for 02-04 sevilles and 02-05 devilles.

This disc is the complete software for the navigation/radio. It's like the operating system for a computer.

Yeah, I know, I almost took the bullet from the dealer on that one. They didn't read the bulletin though, they didn't know about this disc, so it was an honest mistake for them. Sure glad I knew about it though.

  • 5 months later...

Dusty, I havejust experienced the same symptoms you had with your 02 STS navigation system. On mine the screen is in the open position and none of the buttons respond. I went to several dealers to try and get info on the disc you purchased to correct your situation and no one has heard of it. Can you or someone please supply me with the part number for the programming disc and I will try and find one at one of the dealers. Thanks

I'm not sure if this is the old number or the new number, but either way your dealership will be able to look it up. If they don't have one in the back, ask them to locate one for you. Here is the number 19115256. Hope this helps!
