Power Loss

Hey everyone

really need advice on this one. My 95 STS over the last 2 months has had some power loss. The power is still there at high RPM's but seems to lack take off power. Especially when you slow down but don't stop all the way and then try to accelarate again. The exhuast not just gets deeper and no power :o then it finally gets going. This all started when I replaced the mufflers, I don't know if that could cause it. I already replaced the cat based on some advice and that did nothing. I really don't want to just start replacing stuff but I got no idea what is causing it. No codes or anything is showing. I had a check engine light come on the highway a few weeks back but it went off in a minute and no codes in the history  Today when I had go up a slight hill the car did it's thing and I got a really strong gasoline smell, which I have noticed a few times already but always assumed it wasn't me <_< I'm starting to think it is... Could it be a fuel pump issue not getting engough gas or too much gas? Fuel filter? Or maybe the plugs and wires? I was planning to do a tune up this month but really don't want to spend the money on that if in a couple weeks I'll have to buy a fuel pump or something worse. Any experiecnces would be appreciated and thank you in advance

check your fuel pressure regulator (FPR).. I don't know the 95 well enough but if you have fuel present at the vacuum port, change it..

almost sounds like he is starting in second gear

The Green's Machines

1998 Deville - high mileage, keeps on going, custom cat-back exhaust

2003 Seville - stock low mileage goodness!

2004 Grand Prix GTP CompG - Smaller supercharger pulley, Ported Exhaust Manifolds, Dyno tune, etc

1998 Firebird Formula - 408 LQ9 Stroker motor swap and all sorts of go fast stuff

Yes it does, that came to mind.. But the reason I didnt go there was because he is not showing codes..

hey thanx for the info so far... really don't think that I am starting in second but I will check to make sure. I didn't get a chance to look into that FPR mostly because I couldn't find it  I guess the cover will have to come off. I'm sure it's under there. I read up a little on FPR yesterday and most people ussually experience trouble starting which I don't have and never had...not even once. Car starts on the first shot. Could this have something to do with exhaust??? Cause it started shortly after I did the mufflers. WHen the power loss happens the exhaust gets louder almost like it's clogged or something (feel like an idiot saying that LOL) but that's kinda what it feels like. What about tune up? Could that solve it by any chance. Maybe like a weak plug not enough spark I don't know? I just heard that the car starts running rough, but maybe someone else had something like this happen. My Aurora had a dead plug once and had no power but I could definetely feel that one of the cyl wasn't firing. The car just has 60K miles on it so I think even though it's a 95 might still be running original plugs. When I bought it still had original brakes :D. Anyways thanx for the help

OK I have checked the FPR. Found it no problem under the cover. Popped the vacuum line off and nothing. No fuel or anything. Just heard the vacuumed air. I didn't know if the car should be hot or cool. I did it after about a 30min trip, so it was fully warmed up. Should I try it when it't cold? Maybe it's the fuel filter  I hate these kinda problems. When you take the car in you just end up throwing money at it, ussually without success. At the end it always ends up something simple and inexpensive (ussually...I hope :( ) Anyways I'll try maybe doing the tune up (plugs+wires) new PCV valve and EGR cleaning this week. Maybe the fuel filter. See what happends. If anybody has any other ideas please let me know.

Oh yeah by the way I kept an eye on the gear thing and I definitely have 1st. All four work perfectly fine.

I am not up on the 95, so I just want you to take these as possiblities.

First you are not getting codes so we can eliminate problems that relate to proper ignition, timing and emissions. The problem with that statement is that, you have OBDI.. That is the protocol that your PCM utilizes. OBD2 came out in 96..and I know that it monitors mis-fires, etc.

I am not sure if OBDI will produce a mis-fire code (P0300)... I dont think so.. So, the AC Delco platinum plugs have platinum pads on there electrodes that have been known to come off. That has the immediate result of WIDENING the gap and the spark is so hot on these systems that the electrode suffers rapid wear and the gap widens further. This causes the plugs to not fire as powerfully and power suffers.

If those are the original ignition wires or if they are aftermarket wires replace them.. Hows the air filter?

Do you hear any knocking, the kind you get from low octane?

What fuel are you using, with the high gas price you might have been temped to use regular, if you are using regular your PCM will retard timing to eliminate knocking. The retarded timing hurts power.

See if you have an exhaust restriction maybe something is collapsed. Go to mytoolstore.com and look at the Exhaust Back Pressure Tester 33600

http://www.mytoolstore.com/toolaid/diagn04.html

Pull up your fuel rail and see if you have leaky injectors. Pull it up have someone turn on the KEY to ON NOT RUN.. DO NOT START THE CAR. See if any injectors leak. I do believe if you had leaky injectors however you would get a bank to bank fuel trim fault code however. The gas smell you talk about bothers me..

Open your gas cap and see if you have an obvious vacuum or built up pressure.

Check your fuel pressure with a fuel pressure guage, maybe you are not getting good fuel pressure and you are getting poor atomization at the injectors.. I bad fuel filter will starve the engine of gas also...

Its possible that you have dirty injectors also.. ONLY when you are planning a trip use TECHRON injector cleaner use a SMALL bottle on a FULL tank I want you to burn it out FAST. I dont like injector cleaner as it can damage the fuel pump windings and the injector windings so you dont want the injector cleaner to sit on these components long.. Blow through it fast...

Just a few thoughts

almost sounds like he is starting in second gear

But the more I think about this, I am not sure if OBD1 reports all tranny codes. He did say that he was going through all four gears however. I would imagine if it was starting in second gear a code would set...
