Name your oil and filter

I started out using Castro then Valvoline and now have been fixed on Pennzoil (10W30) for quite awhile. As far as the filter goes well I'm pretty sure I've tried everything on the shelf. Currently it's sporting a Mighty filter. Oil and filter get changed around 3-4,000 miles but closer to 3,000 during the winter.

Navion mentioned that his Suburban had 300,000+(nice). My father is on his second full-size Burban and also his second 300,000+ stretch. Is it the oil and filter or is it just good ol GM craftsmanship? Because when it comes to the oil and filter the only rule my father follows is the 3/ 3,000. This always cracks me up because he can afford most things in life but will buy the absolute cheapest oil and filter he can find and then buy it by the gross. I'm talking about brands I've never even heard of. Who knew JCPenneys made oil? I don't know about the rest of you but that always gets a "hmmm" out of me. Hard to argue with dual 300,000+ miles.

Your father and I are alot alike. Although most people have their favorites and swear by them, your father is proof that "oil is oil" and as long as you change it regularly you will not have an oil related failure because you used the wrong brand.

J.C. Penny oil is probably the same oil that is on other shelves for twice the price. One of the big oil companies has to make it and bottle it for J.C.

I currently have several cases of "Super Tech" from Walmart in my garage. (about $1.00/qt.)

If the container displays the "starburst" symbol and the API standard is SG, or better, (GF-3 for ISLAC), I buy strickly on price.

Oil on the shelf in my garage today is Chevron Supreme 10W-30, SL, GF-3.

ACDelco filters only and I buy 5 at a time (35,00 miles worth).

I don't use oil or filters. Well, I used to, then I figured out the cost and time and lugging the used oil, what the hey, I was going to wal mart anyways.

I get the oil I want there and suffer with their filter. My cousin has Fram buy him a BMW after Wal Mart put one on that totally blocked the oil flow. Maybe I can get a new Cadillac? My personal lottery. But I always check their work and make them only add 7 qts, I use my additive to top it off.

I'm not even going to mention my fav additive, Towing a boat weighing 1700lbs I just did a trip from Cleveland, Ohio to Buckhorn lake, Ontario. Made too many trips to the Casino from there and went all the way back to Cleveland, I added .5 qt before I left Ont. and it's still ok now. And Yes I have a NS 1995 & 6.

Living in Florida, I always use Valvoline Max-life 20-50 on my car (currently, 91 Seville, 4.9, 114000 miles (Used to have number 1 main bearing thump, no more. Since leaving Michigan in 1990, no need for lighter oil (10-30 or 10-40). Wonderful car, 6th Cadillac. (first was 1963, wind-up windows).

On GM cars I use Delco filters and through the years I had good Luck with Q state 5w30 Now I get the oil change at the dealer most of the time so it's a delco filter and Valvoline 5w30 Most oils have to meet specs so ther is really no bad oil so to speak. I used to run a oil analysis lab in the Navy which we checked the oil in jet engines which No oil really broke down it just gets dirty from all the moving parts rubbing together( friction) They dropped doing the oil analysis recently due to it did not provide conculsive data to track an impending failure we would check for all the various metals in the oil which you could try to determine something which may let go internal in the engines So based on what metals were high in the oil samples you could try to pin point a failure but it usually did not work that way most of the time.We even did our own cars doing oil analysis samples on a monthly basis and it really did not show much of anything All the Mechanics cars were sampled every month just for kicks..Most of the time when something lets go inside an engine if you drain the oil you get a handful of metal so checking how many parts per million samples just did not make much sense.

Just regular 5w30 works for me I imagine synthetic oil is great for real cold sub zero weather to get the flow going faster but other than that I would not bother using it It's amazing on a cold car engine how long it takes for the oil to get to all the moving parts Just start up a clod engine and notice at how long it takes for the oil to flow through the push rods i have noticed this when I had the valve covers off the engine and fired it just to check the lifters and i was amazed at how long it took to get flow..

Cheers

Boy, I'll bet that was a long drawn out legal battle. I can't imagine Fram rolling over for a new BMW without one hell of a fight.

Wix oil filter

Quaker State 10W-30

I had my car for only 3 months the first oil change was at the dealership last oil change was at Wally world. The guy came came into the waiting room and asked me how much oil does my car take. He said he already put in 6 litres and that it was barely registering on the dipstick. Another service tech asked him if it was the Nothstar engine my service tech replied yes the other guy told him they are not allowed to change oil on Northstar engines. To make a long story short I phoned the service manager at the dealership he said that the engine requires 7.1 litres of oil. Looks like it back to the dealership for oil changes for my baby.
