llewis
Have a 1996 STS Seville, the check engine light is on the car is saying to service emmisions, replaced gas cap and check engine light went out, then about 1/2 hour later it came back on and won't go out now. I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions about what to do and want to know if there is a good way to clean EGR valve versus replacing it. Thanks
chazglenn3
I suggest pulling the codes and then repair whatever the car says is wrong. It is very likely that it will be an EGR pintle position code, that a good cleaning will fix. At least I hope it will be that simple for you! WarrenJ
Mine required cleaning in late 2003 and again early in 2004. When it happened again at the end of 2004 I simply replaced it. It's been good since then. I expect you might continue cleaning it periodically forever, but I just wanted to have a known good starting point with a new unit. That's one of the negatives about owning a used vehicle whose service history you might not be familiar with. Goes double for cars that reach our vintage. Regards, Warren There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises
