error 048

Hi, Scotty?and everyone else too,

I have been busy with a fuel pump problem on the 97 GMC, And now my wife is getting the E048 code.

(91 STS 4.9)

A while back, I had the EGR off while cleaning the Throttle body an it was fine. I reinstalled it with a new gasket.

That was back when I was fighting the bad ground circuit.

It's been a month or so since.

Now When coming up a fairly long hill from the Sacramento valley, it gives the code.

I noticed it is going up to 230 at times on the hill. But I believe I read here that is OK?

What are your thoughts?

E048 - EGR system problem. Usually cleaning the two EGR tubes inside TB fixes the problem. Do you get SES light?

Switch to 3rd gear to increase RPMs while moving up a hill and probably the engine will not get that hot (though it is acceptable).

Sure it's OK. Heck, your cooling fans don't even ignite until your water temperature reaches 225 degrees. biggrin.gif

"Camel Mode," if I recall, doesn't activate until 262 degrees.

Adallak is right. Try 3rd gear if you're concerned. And you are right; Scotty is your *man* on a '91 4.9 vehicle (and quite a few others as well).

There is a hill....near Birmingham, AL, that I must go up to get to the inlaws. It is the only time my gauge goes up 1/4 from half to 3/4 hot. Think its highway 280.

As Adallak mentioned you need to clean the EGR system really good, while some use a hanger, I found round steel wire brushes to be the cats *smurf* for that job. Not that a hanger won't work, it was recommended by bbob, but I am too fanatical. If you have a good tool store near you, they should have round wire brushes in various sizes, the ones I bought were called crankshaft brushes, and I think they are used to clean out the oil ports in crankshaft journals.

I would remove the EGR and clean it the best I can also with wire brushes trying to get to the pindle. You might soak it in a strong solvent but DON'T get the diaphram wet AT ALL.... Don't breath the dust from the EGR there is a warning in the manual... While the EGR is off, I have used compressed air down the two EGR ports down the TB to blow out all debris, put a rag over the EGR port as garbage will blow out there... (this step is overkill, bbob has said but again I'm the fanatic).

Check all EGR vacuum hoses for cracks.. If you get an occasional E048 to H with it, but if you get light pedal detonation also, I might replace the EGR they are hard to clean in that year (I had a 91) and the ONLY way I got rid of light pedal detonation was to replace it...

As far as the overheating is concerned, the 230 does not bother me BUT, keep an eye on it, our friend from Hawaii, Ed Fenwick had a similar problem (4.9) with overheating on inclines and it ended up being his head gaskets and he had to junk his car. As Logan mentioned temps increase on hills and inclines and what you witnessed may be normal.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the temp rise is caused by the torque convertor causing more heat as it will slip more on inclines. The tranny will get hotter and it is passed to the cooling system. If this was a NS, I would suggest you look at the water pump belt/tensioner but its not.

Just keep an eye on it, ONLY because of what Ed Fenwick experienced.

Ahh, I miss my 91. I purchased it 3/99 with 57,000 miles and junked it 7/03 with 137,000 miles. Amazing car.
