Removal of driver airbag - '99 Seville

FSM says that to remove the rubber steering column closeout, and the upper & lower plastic steering column shrouds requires first to remove the tilt lever handle (square button below turn-signal lever).

........... the instructions say merely to pull it straight out from the steering column; in fact it says to grasp with your hand and pull.

But even with screwdriver leverage, I cannot get this button to pull out.

Is it even necessary to do this? probably, since the two halves of the shroud don't come off at this point, even though they've seperated over 1/4 inch and are flopping around on the steering column.

Please give me a suggestion, someone who has done this. There's no other way to get to the four openings in back of the steering wheel to release the wire rods that snap into the inflator module at its four corners.

Thanks; standing by .............

Tried posting this on "cadillacforums.com" but I guess no one currently there has had to remove the steering wheel inflator module (air bag) on this model Seville. hope someone here has done it and remembers this frustrating step.

I have not seen it at cadillacforums....... yet. I removed my daughters '99 SLS airbag last summer. Hers has memory so there is no "lever", only the electronic control button, but all I removed was the column closeout and the upper & lower shrouds.

Thanks Ranger: when I said "lever" I was quoting the FSM. It actually is a small square button: up-down-left-right.

How did you get the 2-piece shroud and the column closeout off? That's where I'm stuck. The shroud won't seperate beyong about 1/4 inch, and the closeout is one-piece encircling the column.

btw, I appreciate your straight attempt to help me; those other replies are a waste of everyone's time, from people with evidently too much time on their hands. If all they can do is comment on type-size and flame an honest question, there are other forums for such juvenile pursuits.

Do a little search under BodybyFisher and Scotty, MUTT and you will see NO ONE helps people more than ME...... I DON'T HOWEVER help people who are demanding and without manners. There is a guy on the newsgroups that will answer your questions for $5 a pop, maybe that is where you can get service

I also take offense to you mentioning that no one on cadillacforums was of any help... Do you tell them over there no one over here was any help? Please be patient when you post a question, I realize you are probably under the dash board, but its necessary to wait a while before members who are familiar with your problem come on and post a solution. SOMETIMES believe it or NOT, you won't get an answer as your problem is too obscure

Well, as well as I can recall, the rubber column closeout just locks together. Peel it back a bit and you should see the locking joint so to speak. The shroud was a bit tricky as I think it snapped together a little after the screws where removed. I am just working off memory here but it should be pretty self evident as you go. Also to get a bit more room to work, you can extend the column by another 1/4" by pushing the button 8 times in the extend position.

Does this link help... It has a picture and everything!

Air Bag Removal Link

You need to turn the wheel 90 degrees to access the slots in the back... I'm not sure this answers your question though...

I did not use or need any tool like that. Not sure what it does or if it is only for the 2000 and/or later. I needed no special tools when I did my daughters.

Wait a minute. I seem to recall a hidden screw somewhere on that shroud. It's been almost a year and you know what they say, the memory is the second thing to go, so without an inspection I can't recall exactly. I also seem to remember that you have to move the tilt to get clearance, but that may be obvious. Let me know how it goes.

Yes, bodybyfisher, I got a little taste of your help here, with this thread. That kind of help we can all do without.

My question was polite, concise and I don't believe removal of airbag module is exactly "too obscure".

Evidently you are poised & ready to flame a post without even reading it completly:

I quit reading half way through.
If you had bothered to read the post you would see that nowhere did I say no-one on cadillacforums was of any help; what I said was "no one currently there has had to remove an airbag ..." so since I was hoping (not expecting) to get a tip about this within 2 or 3 hours, I posted also on this forum. Also the comment was to let those who monitor both forums know not to answer twice, to save them the time & trouble. good manners.

I feel sorry that your "take offense" threshold is so low that you feel the need to jump on a sincere & courteous member who's just trying to see if an answer to his problem is out there somewhere, rather than spending that time truly trying to help someone.

Nothing wrong with joking around with your forum buddies, except when the flaming is factually incorrect, meant to insult, and wastes everyone's time on the forum. I'm sure there are forums such as that out there, likely populated with adolescents with too much time on their hands.

Hey, thanks everyone who sincerely tried to help: thanks for your suggestions. I will let you know tonight how it went with attempt number two.

sorry for the larger-than-usual typeface in the original post: I was at a very small computer screen and tried to bump up the size so I could read it while I was composing; (ranger said memory is the second thing to go but in my case it's my eyesight.)

Got a few good suggestions on cadillacforums as well, and I appreciate y'all taking the time.

To tell you the truth in my original post I was kidding (tongue in cheek)...I was responding to your sense of urgency mentioning that you already posted on the other board cemented home with STANDING BY....If you can't see that you were projecting a sense of urgency and that you were looking for an immediate response, that's a shame.

Sorry to push your button and set you off...it won't happen again I can assure you

I thought you just had to unhook the battery and take the air bag out ?

Michael-

Hey, Michael, you win the prize! That's exactly the procedure, as it turned out.

All that other nonsense in the FSM, like removing the shroud pieces, was just a red herring.

Seriously, I felt like an idiot that I didn't realize the steering wheel only needed to be turned 90 degrees, to access the holes behind it.

I did need to pop both spring retainers on one side, at the same time, but after that everything was easy.

Wheel itself was a b**tch to slide off the spline, though: I started to think someone had welded it on !

Thanks to you all who offered bits of advice & suggestions, which all came together for a successful conclusion.

If I sounded a bit urgent in my original post & hopeful that someone would respond within a few hours, it's because I was. And y'all did! thanks;

(our rainy season, where it rains for an hour or two daily, like clockwork, has started early this year. By 4 pm you'd better quickly start buttoning everything up on your project, if you're outside in the driveway, or you'll get washed away. I knew there were forum members who'd done this before, and sure enough, you came through for me.)
