Electrical Power Loss @ W.O.T.

Hi Everyone,

Spent the Weekend up in New York for the season's last Snowboarding @ Holiday Valley

with my favorite son, (my only son...LOL).

Having the opportunity to do many WOT's through second gear was not to be

missed. I found @ ~5,000 rpms in second gear the headlights would dim

considerably, until I let off! I did it about 5 times throughout the trip, just to

be sure it was still happening. It happened every time. 1997 Deville...

I did not notice any other electrical quirks. My first thought was alternator

belt.

What else should I be checking? I didn't check for codes, yet.

Anyone else ever see this?

thanks,

Try cleaning the battery cables, the current draw from the coils and alternator might be exposing a bad connection at the battery at a certain current draw, and when you let off, the current draw goes away. As you can imagine, at WOT the current draw from the coils increases. Also if you don't find anything, think about the possiblity of an internal short in your battery. Next time you do a WOT watch the voltmeter and see what happens.

Also consider a possible bad power connection at the coils (ignition module?), but I think you would get a code.

This is a new one for us as a group, I have not heard of this before. I have seen my 91 DIE, when the battery was dead as I pulled away from the corner. The battery was very weak (dead cell) and when the coils demanded current to accelerate the engine died. SO in a way, its similar, your problem is happening higher in the RPM range, keep us posted, Mike

My guess would be the belt tensioner got a little rusty at the fulcrum and is not providing enough tension, thus allowing the belt to slip under rapid accelleration.

Thanks for the replies,

I will be under the hood this weekend checking around.

The battery is not very old, the connections look good on

the outside..
