Water Cooled Generator

CRC2362

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I was reading the topics on the board today and came across the water cooled generator.... does my 99 Deville have that? I was reading the Shop manual and it makes no referance that the generator is water cooled. Anyone out there know, was that an option only on the 300Hp engines? Thanks

I think Bob or Jim stated that they have a 99 with a water cooled alternator. I am not sure if its related to the heated windshield but it might be.

If your alternator is water cooled, the Service Manual pages that talk about remove and replace alternator will say something about "drain cooling system" or "remove cooling inlet hose".

My '98 Seville has a water cooled alternator and I am pretty sure '98 was the first year for the Seville and it was standard equipment (not an option).

The concept was dropped after a few model years.

I don't know when they start, but all 98-2000 N*'s have water cool alternators.

This might go all the way back to 93... I'll search to see if I can find out.

CORRECTION

All '98 - 2000 N*s in Sevilles and Devilles have a water cooled "generator"... No evidence of water cooled alternators on any Eldo's...or on '93-97 Sevilles and Devilles..

Looks like these only occured in 98-00. Interesting!

Your right!

So for completeness...

98,99 & 00 Sevilles -> Water Cooled Generator

00 Devilles -> Water Cooled Generator

Other years and ALL Eldos have regular old simple unit!

There are two ways...

One, here is what GM says is required to Re&Re your Generator/Alternator (take note of steps 6&7!):

1) Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure .

2) Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.

3) Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

4) Remove the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C Manual.

5) Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .

6) Disconnect the coolant outlet hose (1) from the generator.

7) Disconnect the coolant inlet hose (1) from the generator.

8) Disconnect the following electrical connections from the generator:

Regulator

Battery output

Heated windshield (if equipped).

9) Remove the generator fasteners from the generator.

10) Remove the generator from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

1) Install the generator to the engine.

Notice

Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

2) Install the generator fasteners. Tighten

Tighten the generator fasteners to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

3) Connect the following electrical connections to the generator:

Regulator

Battery output Tighten

Tighten the battery output cable to 13 N·m (115 lb ft.)

Heated windshield (if equipped).

4) Connect the coolant inlet hose to the generator.

5) Connect the coolant outlet hose to the generator.

6) Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .

7) Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

8) Install the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC Systems with manual A/C.

9) Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.

10 Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.

Or two look for hoses on your Generator as per the attached picture...
