stabilizer bushings

98 Eldo and I have a very annoying front end rattle. I am quite sure it is the dreaded stabilizer bushings.

My question is why do the archives seem to talk about changing the links also? I seem to be able to find replacement bushing seperately on line.

With all the info here I don't know whether to start the job without having the links available or not.

It seems to add a lot to the price of the job and I was wondering if it is for the sake of convenience or if there is a better reason.

Going to drive this car from FL to CO and back this summer and I can not imagine listening to that noise all the way there and back.

Any help or advice will be appreciated.

The noise over bumps can be caused by EITHER the link being damaged and loose or the stabilizer bar bushing (obviously both could be bad also). You don't need to replace the links if they are ok..replace only the bad parts. What I do is disconnect the link from the lower control arm and feel the two joints to see if they have play, if the link joints dont have play, if you are getting bump induced noise it could be the stabilizer bar bushings, you can't really see if the bushings are bad until you get them out. They wear and the bushing stop on the rod is permitted to contact metal and make the noise.

That's my next repair (now that the alternator was replaced yesterday). Anyone have pictures/diagrams of the links?

Thanks!

Yes you can, but they rarely are a problem. I have pulled control arms on my 91 and 96 and the control arm bushings are fine. I even had control arms sent up to Kger2/Regis for his 94 and the bushings were fine. More likely to wear out is the ball joints. Rockauto shows a bushing, but its not clear what it is for you might call them or send www.gmotors.com a request. Do you think you need lower control arm bushings? Mike

The explanation given to me on this forum before has been...

* if your front end noise is only when cold, and goes away when the car warms up, or the weather warms up, it's most likely the stabilizer bar bushings

* if your front end noise is constant, regardless of temperature or other conditions, it's most likely the stabilizer bar end links

yes mike, im wanting to replace them in the control arms. the make noise and there worked! i wonder if it could be from where it was wrecked. them seem to be very cheaply made.

cadillac could use some high standards!
