Belt tensioner help

Hi all,

Can someone tell me how is the belt tensioner secured on?? (with a C-clip or another locking part perhaps)

I recently replaced my alternator 93 STS 4.6L and the belt tensioner seems to be sliding out from the engine around its pivot stem. I was thinking that I may have damaged or lost whatever holds it on when I was trying to put the serpentine belt in place.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me or have a look at yours and let me know if you can visually see an outer securing part? I have checked my manual but did not locate any detailed drawings on this.

Cheers

There is one 15 mm (If I recall) bolt holding it on (at the red circle in the pic below). It's recessed.

I will have a look for this tomorrow and see if it turns out to be my issue. Hope thats all it is because I assume then it only needs to be tightened. Appreciate the info... :D

Can't remember if its the tensioner or the stationary idler pulley, but if your not carefull you can trap the socket wrench between the pulley and the frame. Just a heads up if you have to remove it

You are correct sir there was a 13 mm bolt (replacement tensioner provided with a 15 mm). However I should have clarified my issue a little further as it was the tensioner assembly itself that was coming loose.

Hopefully this picture shows that the assembly was separating (arrow # 2) and the outer washer or cap with tongue? (other arrow around the inner circle) is gone or got damaged and fell off.

Once this piece is missing, the tensioner will not hold together under any pressure. Picked up a new one and installed it. It's been a little bit of a battle...replaced alternator, replaced two oil cooler lines, broke the oil filter adapter, replaced oil filter adapter, belt tensioner failed & finally- replaced tensioner. Things are back to top shape! B) Big relief as the temperatures have been hitting -25 with the wind chill and the car was parked outside!!! :o

I think the wrench is frozen to my hand! lol

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have not seen a tensioner go bad like that.. I am glad you found it and fixed it. Minus 25 degrees (Fahrenheit I hope ) wow, not fun holding steel when its cold and I know there is NO room in there to maneuver... As these cars get older I have found myself replacing everything that turns as the bearings and bushings begin to go...

When I was a kid, I used to help my Dad with our 55 Fleetwood. He once changed a muffler outside in December and I thought he was superhuman.... (I was freezing). Thinking back, he was...

It's not a car its a HOBBY.....
