Curse Cadillac's weak stereo installs...

I have a 1993 Seville and now a 1997 SLS. I am actually angered that they both came with tape decks standard. Especially the '97. That is just plain BS. I started buying cd players for my cars back in '90 when I started driving. There is simply no excuse for a premium car maker to be so far behind the curve in the entertainment aspect. I don't want to hear any of you out there defending them either. Come ON!!! A tape deck in a '97!!??

I just want everyone to know how upsetting this is to a 29 year old Caddy driver, cause I remember just how much wire running, multimeter checking, electronic gutting, and other crap that I had to do to get my 1993 right.

Its too darn cold outside to do the right thing now, so I've installed an XM radio player to get me by until I can rip that cheap crap out of the dash that Cadillac installed.

They actually make it very difficult to replace their radio units, you practically have to run all new wire for everything.

Anyway, I love Caddy, but seriously, I want to beat on the manager of there stereo program.

Dude, if you're that angry about it, why'd you buy the car? Or better yet, why don't you do something about it? Put the optional 12-disc changer in the truck like I did. All cars are pre-wired for the changer...all you have to do is buy it and put it in. It's completely plug-n-play with the radio. Don't have to run wires, don't have to drill holes, don't have to be outside doing the installation for more than 15 minutes if you don't want to. Then you have hours and hours of skip-free music.

I really like the radio that it has -- there's enough bass to vibrate the rear view mirror and for the little kids down the street to ask if I have a subwoofer in that. And I don't even have the Bose system in mine.

Now if it had an 8 track tape deck you'd have something to complain about LOL

When I first picked out my STS, I knew that this was the car that I wanted...low k's, perfect paint, etc. These types of cars don't come up too often so I grabbed it. But, it came with the basic Delco tape AM/FM. The car that I had before was a company leased Nissan Maxima SE, loaded to the max, BOSE system and everything. I stepped into the Caddy and turned on the radio and almost cried. It was pathetic, but I lived with it since it was the only thing that I had. I have since come to my senses and replaced the whole system with MP3 player, Rockford Amp, Infinity speakers, etc. You say to just get a CD changer, but, guys, get into the 2000's here (that's what the kids I coach say). There's no use for a CD changer when you can put 250 songs in MP3 format on 1 CD and just let it play. That's more songs than you can fit in a 12 disk changer.

Now, if the car came with the changer and BOSE system, I would never had changed it, but since it came with garbage it had to go. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Davedog, sweet Eldo!! They are my favourite Caddy!

Well, jadcock, and Northstar, who in the hell buys a car based on the stereo system that it comes with??? ;) No one, they buy the car because of many other features, stereo is last... and definitely not a deal breaker if it's a piece of crap, like every one that my Caddy's have come with. Read KenD's reply. Understandably, we would be upset to have a supposedly better, more expensive car, that has inferior audio capabilities. This is a very valid complaint against Cadillac.

Northstar, I didn't have the option of buying an STS with 47K at $8900 like I did my '97 SLS B) . (I know, it was a steal!! I'm still smiling)

Bob *97 SLS, I highly doubt that cassette tape is the most popular "in car" sound media for "premium luxury sedans", even of the 1997 variety, I also highly doubt that it is the most popular media for just about anything other than rock bottom standard economy cars  .

jadcock, it is nice to know the changer is plug and play. Do I just buy one from the Caddy dealer? Is is specific to my year model? Or can I get something from a '00 Tahoe on ebay?

Yeah, the mp3 thing is a must, once you have a headunit that plays mp3 cds you won't even car about regular cds. I also have sirius radio, so I never run out of tunes! :P

Look at all the marketing about the high-powered factory stereos (Ford's Mach 460, Nissan's Rockford Fosgate, Lexus's Levinstein or something like that) and then tell me again that stereos don't sell cars. Granted, probably not as much on used cars. Perhaps I misunderstood you when you put so much emphasis on how bad you thought the stereo system was and how badly Cadillac messed up the Seville by having a tape deck standard.

Coincidentally, Cadillac's largest target group, at the time, were folks nearing their retirement years, who no doubt have years and years of memories and music on cassette tapes. That's beside the point anyway...a 12-disc changer was available on all Cadillacs. If your complaint was that they didn't even OFFER a CD player in the car would be one thing, and I would agree that it would seem odd. But the fact that your particular car doesn't have one just means that the original owner didn't put a premium on listening to music on CD. Doesn't mean that the rest of the system is so bad, or wasn't "designed" right.

Many GM cars used the same CD changer. In fact, I think it was made by Pioneer, and rumor has it that some Pioneer branded changers will plug in, but may not fit the mounting bracket that is also pre-installed in your car. I just found one on eBay. I think I paid $150 for the changer/radio combo. They were selling both out of a wreck. I didn't need the radio, so I resold it, but I installed the CD changer and it worked great, and still does to this day. You may or may not be able to plug one in from a different car. Let me see if I can find the part number for you for the changer. In fact, I think it might be on the caddyinfo.com how-to pages. You could do a good search on eBay though...search using "gm cd changer" or "cadillac cd changer" and I think you'll find plenty of information, including part numbers.
