The GM manual states that I must remove the harmonic balancer, front cover and oil pump to do a head gasket...Is this so? 94 ETC.

Without looking for the other thread, I'll answer the question here.

Yes, you do need to remove the harmonic balancer, and cover.

I did not need to remove the pump.

The reason is that you need to remove the chains from the cams in order to remove the heads.

This releases the chain tensioners, and they need to be reset/locked when you install the chain again.

I don't think this can be done with the cover in place.

The tensioners are a mechanical/hydraulic device.

When the chain is removed, the tensioners will fully extend, (on way ratchet).

They cannot be depressed again unless you release the ratchet mechanism.

When you depress them fully (prior to installation), they need to be locked by using a pin. (I used a finish nail)

Then, when the chains are installed, you "pull the pin". The tensioner will ratchet out and apply a light load on the chain. Then when the engine is started, pressure from the oil system will apply the correct tension to the chains.

The ratchet mechanism is used to keep the chain from going completely slack when the engine is not running.

The reason I didn't need to remove the pump is that I did not remove the intermediate chain.

Before I removed any of the chains, I marked every relationship, then locked the flywheel.

The flywheel remained locked for the entire timesert process.

I also did the job with the engine in the car.
