pallen54115
I hear a growling noise from the front end of my '99 De Ville when over 60 MPH. Would this possibly be CV Joint trouble? Or a wheel bearing? I have 62,000 miles on the car. Thanks in advance for any ideas/experience.
adallak
does it become louder while making turns? The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
green99std
Hi - I also have a '99 Deville and I can hear a groaning from the right front when turning the wheel while moving very slowly or standing still. You can feel it through the steering wheel as well. green99std
pallen54115
I haven't noticed anything while turning, but that's at lower speeds. Is 62,000 too early for CV Joints? that was the first thing that came to mind, but I'm only guessing. Has anyone replaced them, and when?
adallak
62K is early for CV or hub bearing assembly, but ... I changed one of my hubs at 125K and I am not afraid of bumps and speed. try to drive slowly (some 35-40) and make some right and left turns. if you notice difference pay attention what turn causes louder noise. probably one of your hubs is not good anymore. it is some 80$ part and easy to replace. Ranger
My car has 78K and still has the original bearings & cv joints. 62k IS early but not unheard of. I replaced the RF wheel bearing & hub *smurf*'y on my last car somewhere around 80k but it still had the original cv's at 125k when I traded. I think cv joints usually make a clunking sound when they start to go. If it is a bearing it will slowly get more and more noticable til (as previously mentioned) you can make a series of small "S" turns and you will hear the noise come and go as you load and unload the bearing. pallen54115
Thanks for the advice, all. I'll try the S turn test and see what happens.
