transmission slipping

Recommended Posts

hello everyone! i am new to this so all the help sent my way is very much appreciated. ok here is my problem going into as much detail that i am aware of. i recently bought a 1997 eldorado for 2100. it had its small problems that i knew i could fix easy and relativatally cheap. or so i thought! after the 3rd or 4th day i noticed that the overdrive wasnt engaging or slipping. but not a normal slip. after shifting to second and then 3rd it seemed at 40-45 mph that it would not go into od. so i went to a major chain tranny shop (AA-need i say more). they said it was torque convertor. rebuild. 2500. priceless!!! LOL!!!. so, wanting a second opinion, i took it to a shop that was recomended through a friend of a friend. they drove the car today and also dicussed with me the possibility of it being the valve body gone bad. also the fluid was very black and did have a slight burn smell. now i know everyone will want to know the codes. there are only 4 of them. they are---PCM P0108...PCM P1106...MSM B2119...MSM B2120. they all show "history". no "current" codes. now for some history on the car that i have been told by the seller i bought it from. the original owner lost his license and parked the car. not for months but YEARS. a sticker on windshield shows in 2006 it had 91,464 miles. when i bought it in feb 2010 it had 92,172. it shifts great from 1st to 3rd and at the shifting point of od, nothing. it does not rev up the engine. at 60mph revs are about 2400. if you let of the gas rpm drops immediately to 1200 to 1500. now as i am on a limited budget(very limited) i need all the info that i can get just in case it is something that i can do myself with tranny in the car. so please let me pick your brains! Thank you to everyone for a very helpful forum. also can someone tell me why i have a hood ornament and have not seen another with one???

P0108 - Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Circuit High Voltage

P1106 - Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Circuit Intermittent High Voltage

B2119 - Lumbar Forward/Aft Sensor Failed

B2120 - Lumbar Up/Down Sensor Failed

The problem you are having is odd, I would think you would set a code, if it is TC related. If the TC was slipping it would set a 741, if it was an engagement problem a TCC code.

I am surprised you are not getting a P0741

Maybe your clutches are slipping with the burned fluid

BBF, this is why i am confused also. i am taking it in today to the shop to have the pan taken off so they give a better diagnosis. when i get back i will post the results. i also forgot to mention that when you put it into drive it has a slight hesitation, about 3 seconds before it engages. reverse is the same.

I think you are going to find clutch material in the pan. The shops you took it to should have pulled the pan before issuing a prognosis

Let us know what turns up, if anything. If nothing else, at least the burnt trans fluid will be changed.....

just got back from shop and it wasnt good. did have clutch material in pan and also small pieces of the thrust washer. they want to do a total rebuild. so i am sure that would be the best way to go since i really cant afford to go out and buy another car. besides i like my caddy! i guess this is the reason that no codes have came up. the shop also told me that they could give me a discount of 300 to 400 dollars off their estimate just because it is so costly to rebuild. they are willing to help me out by letting me pay in payments. i havent found many shops that will do that. so thanks to everyone out there for all the info that i didnt know. i will stay on this forum because i have learned so much. i will keep all updated on the progress of my car.

Nice and unusual idea. But I don't think it will solve this problem.

Cadillac LED Tail Lights

Try clarifying that statement. WHAT won't solve this problem? He is dropping the pan, to see what they find NOT for the purpose of changing the fluid.

after taking the advice of BBF i checked the BBB for the particular shop. it has an A rating and 0 complaints in the past 36 months. after checking on that "other" company, each shop in my area had no less than 4 complaints in the same time period. most were NOT resolved. also after reading some letters recomending this shop, i feel safe that these people do the right thing. it is family owned and operated and the technicians seemed very helpful in explaining everything. so if anyone lives in the Tampa Florida area and is looking for a good shop i recomend Jeffs Transmissions.
