Coolant Tabs

Recommended Posts

Last Friday I replaced the upper intake on my wifes '96 Bonneville. When I opened the drain on the radiator nothing came out. I was baffled. The engine was still hot as my daughter just got home so it was still under pressure. Then I remembered the sealant tabs I had put in there so I poked a screw driver up the drain tube and coolant came pouring out. Guess that stuff works. Now I am wondering how much of it is settled in the bottom of the radiator or other spots clogging coolant flow :(

I wonder the same thing.....I always put two of the the Bars leak stuff in just like ive read here and elsewhere.....but I wonder if it would ever cause more harm then good.......I drained the radiator twice in the last 5 months so Im not too worried as Ive had no problem....but I plan to do the cooling system every 8-12 months not 24.....the Florida heat is hard on the engines anyways.

The manual for my 94 says to put in 3 tablets, but I've heard that you should put in 6. I'll stick to what the manual says.

Question.. I drained the radiator and pulled the hoses and stuff and got as much coolant out as i could, even took off the surge tank and flushed it out. I put a little less than 2 gallons back into it and it filled the whole system. How in the world do I get the rest of the stuff out? Now i have 2 gallons of good stuff, mixed with 2 gallons of old stuff.. ugh.. I was going to 'flush' it but I heard somewhere that it is bad for it?

I always used to flush my cars with the hose but I didn't this time. Is having half good half old stuff ok or should I drain the radiator again? I put 2 'cylinders' of bars leak's gold stuff

If you drained the radiator and pulled the hoses I am sure you got way more than 50% out (I forget what the capacity is but I think it is near 2 gallons). I don't think flushing it is "bad" but it will introduce whatever minerals are in the tap water. The best way I have found to get the residual coolant out is plug the hose from your shop vac into the exhaust side and stick the nozzel in the surge tank. Seal it with your hand as best you can. That will blow most of the residual coolant out with low pressure and high volume, though I really think you got 99% of it the way you did it. Remember, the radiator drain (if you were able to reach it is the lowest point in the system.
