I have an opportunity to buy a used 2001 Seville STS with 90k miles for $5,000. I took it on a long test drive today and it feels OK with everything working except the AC (blowing cool, not cold air). This is the car's second owner. He has had the car for 9 months. He said he bought it from an old lady who was the original owner. I ran a CARFAX and these statements appear to be true. The owner says he's selling due to economy but I think he may just have too many toys. Passed state inspection last year, but will need a new inspection to get tags. I'm taking it to a good independent mechanic tomorrow to have it looked over. Anything I should be looking for specifically with this model? I've heard some bad things about the Northstar. Comments please.

Go to the top of this page, click HOW TO, then DTC CODES, and follow the directions for your year. Retrieve the codes and post them here, we will be able to let you know if you have any serious codes

Do you have the maintenance records, has the coolant been changed?

Pre 2000 Northstars when prone to head gasket failures (which is a very expensive, labor intensive repair). GM made some improvements in 2000 so the 2000+ are much less prone to the failure. Be sure the coolant has been changed on schedule (or sooner). If not, DO IT.

Thanks for the replies. I'll ask the mechanic tomorrow if he can pull any codes that may exist. As far as the coolant, the current owner has not changed it. The message on the dash said the coolant was at 100%, if that helps.

It does NOT say the coolant was at 100%, it probably said the OIL LIFE was at 100%

Be VERY VERY careful buying this car, the price appears low, with gas prices down and the STS getting decent MPG his reason for selling it are weak
