Cooling fans won't turn on, stumped!!!

Recommended Posts

Hey all again, got some problems that I cannot pin point. I have a 97 seville sts and the cooling fans won't kick on.

I first went ahead and checked to see if the fans themselves were working. I can only get 1 (passenger side) to go on even on a switch. My first question is, would this make it so the drivers side won't kick on, because its not operational? Im new to cooling systems so bare with this dumb question, probably not huh.

Well I went ahead and replaced the 3 relays that are under the fans. Warm it up, starts getting hot, about 3/4 up to the red so I shut it off at this point. So thats not it.

I today replaced the coolant temp sensor and they still will not turn on.

Ive checked every fuse I can think of (a/c compressor, cooling fans maxi)

The message center indicates that there is very low refrigerant, a/c compressor off. Is this related? Could it be I guess I should say.

I'm hoping not, but its leaning towards a wiring problem, maybe ground? Where are the grounds located for the 4.6 northstar fans? Just so I can check these out as Im running out of things to check/replace.

Any and all pointers/thoughts , and especially a diagram for grounds would be VERY appreciated.

Thanks Mike

Refrigerant has nothing to do with the cooling system. The fans come on at 224 degrees. Seems like you where at that point. Before you worry about the fans, have you tested for exhaust gases in the coolant?

No i havent. How do I go about that. Are you leaning towards a head gasket?

Check for codes, bad relays, temp sensors set codes

Check each fan to be sure the motors are good, I have had bad motors

I can get passenger side to work, on a switch, but not the drivers side. I replaced the cts sunday. I also replaced the thermostat, and 3 relays under the fan.

It doesn't use coolant, no signs of gasket failure under oil cap, radiator overflow tank cap, oil level is fine doesn't look mixed with water/coolant, no white smoke out tail, don't look like a hg. Just the fans are not turning on at all ever. It will just run and overheat with no fans.

Like I said I have the 1 I can get to work on a switch, and as long as I keep using the fan every once in a while it don't overheat, therefore it looks like the problem right? If any cars cooling fans didn't ever kick on wouldn't they overheat?

You need to explain what you mean by you can get the passenger side to work, ON A SWITCH?, what did you do specifically

passenger side cooling fan. the drivers side fan will not work even on a switch. BUT even weirder, is that it I just wire the drivers side fan the passenger side kicks on. Help lost with this.

do you know what it means to post codes?

Post your DTC codes, go to the top of this page, click HOW TO, then DTC CODES, then follow the directions for your year and post the codes here, that will help, Mike

I am assuming that you are concerned about the fans because you are overheating and suggested the test to rule out HG's. You have to buy the kit from Napa and follow the instructions. If you are not overheating, then disregard.
