Vibration and noise in front end

Recommended Posts

I am new to this, so here goes. I have upgraded from a 1995 STS that my son now drives to a 2001 STS.

I have a vibration in the front end around 70 MPH. I have replaced the two wheel bearings that made the noise almost go away.

When replacing the left side bearing I saw grease coming from the CVC boot, checked it for holes found none. It looks like its leaking around the side closest to the trany. It fell like there was a lot of play in it. Do I have to change both CV Half Shaft Assemblies at the time, and how hard is it to do.

If the boot is throwing grease you can be assured that there is a rip somewhere. I have changed a boot once. It was a filthy, greasy, PITA job. If I had to do it again I'd change the entire half shaft. If you did the bearings, you can probably do this. There is a retainer of some sort at the trans side that is a little tricky as I recall, but I'll let someone who has done it comment further.

Thanks, Ranger

I was looking in the Chilton manual, and I didn't see anything about a retainer, I was thinking there should be one also.

Is it possible to get a bad new wheel bearing, the one on the driver side seem to be making noise. Used an after market brand called National. Guess I should wait till I change the CV Half Shaft Assembly on the left side first.

Chiltons and Haynes manual make good liners for parakeet cages (too coarse for toilet paper). A FSM by Helm Inc. is what you want. I suppose anything it possible. Do some "S" turns like a NASCAR driver warming his tires. A bad bearing will growl louder when loaded and quiet down when unloaded.

Thats good Ranger  I usually say they make good kindling...

The axle snaps into the transaxle if its the same as the 96, use a pry bar and it will pop out

So let me get this straight there is no snap ring or locking device, and were do I get a FSM?

There is a ring on the end of the axle that pops into a groove inside the transaxle, when you put a prybar and pry out the axle it will pop out of the groove, there is NO snapring or retainer to remove to get the axle out

You can get a FSM on EBAY or from helmsinc.com
