Overheating at high speeds

Hello everyone-

I need your thoughts and advice on a recent overheating issue that happened with my 1998 SLS.

She has 150,000 miles. Head gaskets were replaced and timeserted at 105k. Has run great ever since except half case oil leak (about quart, quart and 1/2 a month)

Ever since my headgasket problem, I always keep close watch on temperature guage.

Recently while on 3 hour trip I noticed guage moving quickly towards hot while going 85 mph for some time. Upon slowing down to normal 60 mph range. the guage went back to normal.

Just the other day while on highway, going 55, I passed a car ahead of me and quickly reached 80 mph and guage once again started moving towards hot (3/4 of way there). Upon returning to normal 55 speed, temperature once again returned to normal.

I have no coolant leaks. Water pump was replaced at time of head gasket repair.

I am thinking maybe my radiator is not working to capacity. Inspection shows normal bug dents to condenser, but radiator looks good.

Maybe combination of bug dents and pellets have the radiator not working as it should???

Should I consider a radiator flush of replacement??

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Tommysls

Check your water pump belt and tensioner, if either is bad you can experience high speed overheating

If you find either the belt OR the tensioner bad, replace them both. A belt that has been slipping is usually due to a bad tensioner.

If the belt has been slipping, it will get glazed and brittle from the heat generated by the slipping.

Take Care,

If that is the case, check your coolant for combustion by products due to a bad head gasket before wasting money on a radiator. you can buy a tester at NAPA or have a radiator shop perform the test. A symptom of a bad head gasket is overheating at high speeds or under load. Are you using any coolant?

Also check the air bleed line, while the car is idling pull its hose off the tank and a stream of coolant should pour out, if no coolant your bleed line is clogged and you have air in your system and the pump is cavitating.

I would say check the cooling fans but at high speeds air is forced though the radiator.

Unless your radiator is clogged and impeding coolant flow its not likely your radiator.

Also made sure your coolant is 50/50
