Coolant system

I've had an issue for a while now where the temp will start to climb while I'm parked. While I'm driving I think that the thermostat opens because the car will sit at 196 degrees for a while. When I idle, like going through a drive-thru, the temp will slowly climb until the fans kick on at 224. Then it'll go back down to normal and start climbing again. Not losing any coolant. I ordered a new water pump belt thinking that might be the issue. I got my water pump belt today from RockAuto.com.

Took the water pump cover off, and I can see where the belt has been chewing into the upper radiator hose. It looks like it's almost gotten through, I'll have to pick up a new upper radiator hose. This might be my issue, but I'm going to check my hollow bolt and my air purge lines today. The tensioner seems ok. I'm going to remove it so I can put on the new belt.

Did I install the upper radiator hose wrong? It wasn't an ACDelco, but it was a molded hose for my vehicle.

I'm going to keep this thread updated until I fix my problem.

Can anyone help me with a quick question please?

There's three pulleys around the water pump belt. The one on the tensioner spins freely, the one on the water pump spins freely, but there's one on the top, mounted on the uh block? that does not spin. Is that supposed to spin?

If it is, what tools do I need to remove it and install a new one?

With your A/C OFF, this is normal and expected temperatures.

The top pulley is the drive pulley connected to the front bank exhaust camshaft. It will be spinning its little heart out when the engine is running.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was about to hop in the car to go to Cadillac and get the pulley, and Checker to rent a pulley puller kit  That makes total sense, since something would have to drive the belt. I'll replace this belt then, and keep looking for my issue.

My lower radiator hose that goes to the thermostat hasn't been changed since the car was born. Could that be collapsing somehow and causing my problem?

Are you saying that I'm not having any issue, and this should be normal and expected?? During the winter with the heat on, the temp stayed rock solid at 196. I've been watching my battery instead of monitoring the temp, so I'm not sure if the rise in temps coincides with not using the HVAC anymore. Should I not even worry about the temp climbing like that, then?

The is correct, that plastic fiber pulley is attached to the CAM and you won't be able to turn it, the belt is driven by the CAM, cool idea huh?

If you are asking what tools you need to remove the belt, you need a 1/4 breaker bar or socket handle, ill post a photo. Move the idler wheel to loosen the belt with the socket handle.

By the way, your temps sound normal. turn the hose at the connecting points to adjust its location away from moving components, I dont understand how the upper hose got so low as to be hit by the WP belt..

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I'm ordering a new upper radiator hose from rockauto.com along with some other things I need, like a new socket for one of my tail lights.

I have a question about putting the water pump belt tensioner back on, is there a torque spec for it? Can't find it in my FSM.

My guess is that you dont have the AC on, is that correct? Is your AC operational?

I've got the AC turned off completely. It's only gotten to the upper 70s here in Minneapolis. I've ran the AC for a couple minutes and gotten no codes. I was told that it was low on refrigerant when I had my back heater core lines replaced. It's almost a 14 year old car, and I'm not sure if it's ever been charged. I'll be doing that here in the next couple weeks.

That is the reason you are seeing the temperature fluctations you are seeing. If your AC was on, you would not see those type of fluctuations. Do you understand why?

Your temps are perfect.... not to worry.

JimD and BBF are both correct - the temp characteristics you are observing are normal and expected. The system is behaving as designed. You should take comfort that it's working perfectly.

I have a question about putting the water pump belt tensioner back on, is there a torque spec for it? Can't find it in my FSM.

In my 1996 FSM in Section 6A2 in a section called Fastener Tightening Specifications, it states that the Water Pump Drive Belt Tensioner to Water Pump Crossover (stud) tension is 89 inch pounds (lb. in.) Mike

INCH POUNDS NOT FOOT POUNDS, 12 inch pounds = 1 foot pound

Here is a photo of the 1/4" breaker bar in the WP tensioner

Thank you very much for the replies!

The old belt was cracking and probably in need of replacement anyways. I'm glad I did the work, because I noticed that radiator hose was being worn through. I've got a new one on order, and I zip tied this one to a radiator fan mount. It has a lot of play in it in the center above the fans.

I don't have a torque wrench that does inch pounds, and my foot pound only goes down to 10 ft lb. I just snugged it up and left it. I might get an inch lb wrench, and I still have to replace my ISC motor so I'll adjust it when I do that. There's a new craftsman inch lb torque wrench on craigslist that I might be able to pick up real cheap.

Thanks again for the help, I really appreciate it.

That is the reason I like to get under the hood and see what is going on. If you don't get under there and look around, your first notice that you had a problem could have happened on a dark highway in the rain...on in bumper to bumper traffic in 100 degree heat, good catch.

Because when the AC is on, the fans run constantly. To cool down the AC compressor?? I'm assuming that either the fans or the AC compressor must run when the heat is on then. I was thinking that they didn't, and that's why the fluctuation in temp was bothering me because I hadn't had that before.

Correct (almost), when the AC is on, the fans run constantly, when the AC is off, they turn on at about 228 and turn off at about 217 if I recall. When the AC is on and the fans are running all the time, you won't normally see peaks of 228 unless you are in traffic and/or the ambient temp is high (summer).

Its not to cool the compressor, its to compensate for the added heat produced by the AC condenser that is responsible for dissapating heat. You will see different temps in the summer than winter months due to the outside temps. When you have the heat on the AC compressor runs (above a certain temp), so yes you probably didnt see those fluctuations plus the ambient temps are low.

Thanks for the explanation. You guys have been an awesome help.

My temp sometimes drops down to 192 or 189 on the freeway, too. Is that normal?

That's terrific, I'm jealous, I'm at 196. It sounds like your cooling system is doing good. Relax about it, even if you see 240-245 in traffic in August heat

That's good to know. I've been worried about the fluctuation for a while now. There's been a lot of posts lately about head gaskets, and while I know that's not the problem it still worried me. I've never seen above 225 though, even sitting for a half hour or more. That's a big relief, thanks for helping me out.
