don280z
There is a 'chirp' under the hood whenever the A/C compressor cycles... Has anyone else experienced this? How do I fix it??? Do I need a new belt?
JLAWS
My 98 STS does the exact same thing for 3 yrs now and still blows ice cold air. I think it's just the Ac clutch that causes it. It's normal.
Luke
My 1998 STS did that also. It is caused when the compressor clutch engages, the belt slips around the compressor slightly before the compressor is spinning as fast as the belt. While your belt may be fine, a new one would probebly stop the chirping. I would leave it though as it isn't a problem. The chirp is just kind of an annoyance. Do I need a new belt? Consider the harmless chirp to be an audible confirmation that your compressor is being cycled as designed. Spray a shot of belt dressing on the belt and see if that makes any difference. If your serp. belt has close to 100K miles, you might (should) consider replacing it for reasons other than the A/C chirp. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! Ranger
Also check your tensioner. If it is hanging up and is not applying enough tension, the belt will slip.
gibson
Hello I had the same problem. It came after that I had cleaned the engine. I sprayed the compressor with some 5-56(greasing spray)and the "shirp"is now gone.
don280z
Well, a quick shot of lubricant on the compressor clutch fixed the problem. Thanks guys!....
Maximln
My 98 STS made a noise as well when the A/C compressor was on. It turns out one of the condenser lines was vibrating and hitting a nearby part. I sort of tied it together to keep if from vibrating and now no noise!
