98deville
1998 deville with 110k I was driving my car the other day and while driving a "Battery Not Charging" message and the battery symbol came out. Any idea what could it be? The car never turned off or anything but I pulled over, turned it off and turned it on again the message was still there...So I just kept driving like that till I got home....Could it be the alternator? JimD
B1911 - Generator L-Terminal Problem The L (for LAMP) terminal is the connection that signals the PCM to give the warning you saw on the DIC. A quick test for alternator condition is to note the system voltage with the engine OFF. Compare that value to the system voltage with the engine running. The voltage should be at least 1.5 Volts higher when the engine is running. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !

JimD
That should work. All you need to see is a 1.5 Volt (minimum) increase with the engine running. I would be inclined to use one of my own voltmeters, but that is just me and my methods. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! 98deville
The voltage decreased it was at 12.0 with the car off kinda hesitated to turn on but did turn on and the voltage dropped to 10.
JimD
Not a good result. I would locate a local automotive electrical specialist and have your alternator rebuilt with OEM parts. Most folks on here would recommend against installing an autoparts store rebuilt exchange part. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! KHE
how about just buying a reman AC Delco alterator from rock auto You could but most of the time, the actual part that failed in the alternator can be replaced for far less than a cost of a reman unit. In addition, you know the condition of the rest of the alternator. Check the yellow pages under Auto electric service and you should be able to locate a shop that will repair your existing alternator. 98deville
Would an alternator from another 98 deville from the junk yard be good?

KenD
get it rebuilt. I had mine rebuilt from a local starter/alternator guy who used only North America parts. Cost me $130 for a COMPLETE gut and rebuild as my alternator was shot. Now getting it in and out was another story all together. If R&R it yourself, then get the junkyard part for quick fix, but it's time consuming and TIGHT to get at so for an extra $50 or less get it rebuilt.
