Hello, i was refered to this site as to my wife's Engine has developed a surge at idol when it warms up.

Fluctulates between 500-1000 rpm,at a stop with foot on brake. When you hammer it it sounds starved of fuel. and if you accelerate steady seems to be fine. Also when i Power brake it it just boggs down and again sounds like it's looking for fuel it is a 1998 Olds Aurora 4.0/ 96,000m.... (takes that xpensive High test)darn race car!!

Iv'e changed the fuel filter and no help and cleaned the Maf and the air filter is brand new.

We are new to our area and do not know any mechancis and i <_< distrust all the dealers in the area due to a previous issue with My Gmc 2500 HD 6.6. Pretty handy with tools just need a diagnosis, i hate to just throw $$$$ at it to try and fix said problem Thanks for any info and direction Surging in Nashville

It might make more sense for you to visit an Aurora forum, while the engines are somewhat 'similar' you will get more specific help from them as they have direct experience, check these forums:

Surging on the NS can be caused by the ISC motor, the TPS, the IAC and a dirty throttle body, not sure what controls the Aurora has. Also check the fuel pressure regulator for evidence of fuel at the vacuum port and check to see if any computer codes have been set. Have you checked for codes?

Well Mike beat me to it but I would second cleaning the TB & IAC valve and check for a leaky FPR. I would also add that surging is a common symptom of a vacuum leak.
