once i got my shift solenoid problem fixed and the transmission started shifting when i drive in o.d it slips after a while and goes back into limp mode. when i shut it off and start it up again it shifs ok. now it doesnt do it if i drive in 3rd all the time but it has atleast once a day since i fixed it. so im just prepare'n myself for the worst. any idea on how much it would cost to have one rebuilt i havent price it yet. if i had a garage to do it i would do it myself

First thing I would do is check the fluid level. Then you might want to swap out your PCM with a junkyard unit and see if that helps...Any codes btw?

already checked the fluid . i scanned it with my scanner and it said shift solenoid b again. how do read the codes from the car without a scanner? what do u thinka used pcm will do?

The main wiring hardness runs from the plug at the tranny through the transmission. You replaced the solenoid, and you still get the code. Let assume for a second that the solenoid WAS good, the only other possibility would be the wiring or connection at the solenoids being loose or some other connection or the main connector itself.. Think about this angle

When I did my ISS speed sensor, I should have replace the wiring harness, it leaks tranny fluid

What color was the fluid? Did it appear to be burnt/stained? Did you find any abnormal amount of debris in the pan? (other than a few shavings attached to the magnet)

Im not sure where to go from here, could be a wiring issue but I doubt it (Have "we" ever proven a soleniod issue to be wiring related ??)

You can verify the functionality of the solenoids in one of two ways: 1. with a multimeter (someone is going to have to chime in here as Im not exactly sure how to back-probe and such) -or- you can drop the pan and fire the solenoids manaully via the pcm overide command located within the OBD (got to love OBD-1) Once the pan is dropped you can verify the solenoids firing as they will fire for 20 seconds then shut off (you can hear them clicking away).

You really need a FSM (factory shop manual) to do either of the above, hopefully you have one. If not let me know and I will post instructions on how to manually fire the solenoids.

And a rebuilt Tranny should run no more than $2000 (I got mine done for $1850 and it has been nearly bullet-proof for the past 25,000 miles) .If you do decide to go that route make sure the shop is ATRA certified and whatever you do DON'T take it to AAMCO!

Generally speaking, the 4T80E is pretty robust. We rarely hear of problems. I thin I'd opt for the "slightly used G.M rebuilt trans for 375"

Well more bad news tran slightly used rebuilt is for a cadillac with the 8th vin. #9 and of course mine is an (Y). they said the gear ratios different an would probly set a code

That is true... that is good news that you found that out BEFORE you installed it.. sorry we did not put you on notice to watch out for that...

Rhino Transmissions might be worth a look. I can't recommend them but I looked at them a while back and from what I remember they will sell a remanufactured trans for $1,895 and they will deliver and pickup the core.

Glad to hear it, sorry to hear about the tranny. If I may make a suggestion, whatever you do, make sure you find a good rebuilder, one that not only can rebuild the tranny but that can also R&R the tranny competently. I had my tranny go on my 91 Seville and the tranny was fine but the R&R was terrible and I was left with all kinds of problems and eventually junked it..

Time is money to these installers, they virtually rip the tranny out with no grace at all, its like extracting a tooth with Channel Lock Pliers. The R&R job is left to the least experienced person in the shop, grunts. Or as my Dad used to say, Slam Bangers. So look for one that is very competent at R&Ring. To me, that is the hard part installing the tranny correctly and having everything work, aligned, routed and tightened. The simple act of removing the main electrical harness from the engine is rough, not to mention reinstalling it correctly and putting back all of the retainers, etc. Its a effin daunting task if you ask me. Choose wisely.

is there anyway to get the pcm tuned for the diff. gear ratio?

My guess is no, because the STS PCM also expects to see a different engine, I would think it would be too involved

I would purchase an exact replacement transaxle with the 3.11gr. It's really the only viable option considering PCM/EPROM programming issues associated with different gear ratios (3.11gr. (SLS) & 3.71gr. (STS)). The 3.71gr. STS transaxle in a SLS would likely set any number of codes because the 3.71gr. would likely cause confusion with other powertrain parameters.
