Ha! Ha! Ha! :D I'll answer that question for you. You will NOT enjoy it at all!!! The whole process sucks from start to finish. I bought this car with a blown head gasket for the sole purpose of fixing and selling, and this has been anything but fun. An enormous effort, bareknuckled, bruised arms, and weekend-eating job? Yes. Fun? Umm, no. But educational! Good luck with it, and may it be your last. =)

so what are you doing with your timesert kit?

i have had my car for 7yrs now and i want to fix it. i did not get into it as a moneymaking effort. i do agree that it is a huge job.

It will be a challenge, as long as you have the time, energy and don't need your car, you will be fine... You will learn a lot also. I can tell you that just dropping the carriage 10 inches was rough. Its physically challenging, but I am an old man...now

my engine is hanging from the hoist now. i was going to borrow an engine stand but that feel thru so i have to buy one. i think i will be buying everything i need. it seems like all your friends have stuff you can borrow till you actually need it. than its gone, lost or stolen. i figure i am 1/2 done. do the heads is 1/4 and putting the motor back in the car is the last 1/4. or at least it feels that way to me.

Don't forget to look at Harbor Freight's catelog, they have some pretty good prices.

Here is one, they have others:

Even fully dressed a Northstar weighs nothing close to 2000 pounds... One of the cheap $45-50 stands you can get at Costco will work just fine...

I'm rebuilding an all cast iron Olds 350 on one with no issues.

Yes, Harbor Freight has one for $50 with a 750 capacity, good point Greg

i wonder what non-professional folks do with their timesert kits after 1 use? its not like they are going to ever do it again. why not sell the kit than? but you never see that many for sale on the used market. its not like buying a set of sockets that can be used on many jobs. its for doing 1 thing and than never doing it again. does every GM dealer have a kit? how many does kent-moore sell in a year? 20 or 1000 or what? maybe its not really such a common repair or else GM just replaces the motors and does not fix them.

Joeb - I'm looking to do this same repair very soon. It sounds like you're a DIY'er also.

How did you take the engine out? From the top or bottom? Did you have access to a vehicle lift, or did you manage it with floor jacks and wood blocks? Did you just pull the engine or engine & tranny together?

I'd appreciate any lessons learned.

Thanks.

i took the motor out the top with a hoist. i have lots of time since its an occasional use car now. i would work on it for an hour or so than take a few days off and i realize now that putting it back together will be a real test of my memory. my garage is pretty tight and i considered raising the body with the hoist but that seemed rather intimidating. pulling motors is fairly easy. just takes time. reaching the brackets that connect the transaxle to the backside of the motor is the hard part. you will end up with bruises on your arms. i have never pulled a FWD motor before. now that i have, i think most cars are probably assembled the same. of course its not like pulling a 4cyl out of a honda.

I'll put my 2 cents in again....

If the cradle is not connected the body is surprisingly light. It seems lighter than the engine on the hoist. All the hard parts to reach become very easy to reach when the body is not surrounding the driveline.

I'll repeat, dropping the cradle is the easiest.

I already sold it. :( They ARE out there... keep looking on this board and ebay! When you're done with it, you should be able to sell it for the same amount (assuming you purchased it used), and just be out the cost of the thread inserts, which is like $65 for the entire motor.

I'm a very casual with my N* overhaul as you are. I'm on month 10 !! Motor is bolted back in, just need to connect all the hoses, sensors, and fill with fluids. That may take another month or so... lol. It's hard to find time to wrench in the summer time - it's so nice out!
