Willie Hank
Okay, before I replace the starter, is there a way diagnose it rather than a solenoid? There is a very quiet clicking noise when I turn the key, that is coming underneath the car, at the very bottom , almost directly below the airbox. It is a metal case with the some sort of relay housing on top, but the noise is so faint, not typical of a starter solenoid. My first thought is the solenoid is okay, since it is making a noise,...but I'm not sure... I can always pull the starter and fire it help with 12 Volts, but that is some effort when you have to special order the starter... Any thoughts.... adallak
try first applying a positive voltage to starter, I AM SURE THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE STARTER. It is old wiring. You'll see the car starting right away. If it does not work Than try to do something to the starter. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
Ranger
The clicking sounds like the solenoid is working. Like adallac said, check the cables for a good clean tight ground and look for corrosion under the cable casing before you start replacing starters.
