96 deville slight sputter

Recommended Posts

I got the sensor changed yesterday. looking at your pics confirms that the previous owner changed the hoses. they told me their mechanic did it all and gave me his number. i called him and explained the situation and he told me he installed metal hoses around the back of the engine instead of rubber. these are the pics of what i had to do to the crow foot socket just to get the sensor off.

i believe when i changed my 02 sensor i dislodged the pcv valve. i snugged it back up and let the car idle for 25 mins and it never threw the code. problem solved i hope.

That is what I thought was the cause of the vacuum leak, glad you got the O2 sensor out

Problem not solved. I do know the cause. There is a flap on the opposite end of the throttle body right behind the power steering pump. The part store don't even know what it is. I am in the proses of uploading pic of part I pulled from intake at junk yard.

Did some research it's the over pressurization relief valve. Any comments or tips on replacing. Can't find any online. I have 2 from the junk yard.

Are you hearing a whistling noise or sucking air sound?

We have had a couple of members with this problem, rockfangd, if I recall had this problem, he will chime in with his experience

yes I did on my 97 Seville. The intake has to be replaced to resolve the problem.

The valve is right next to the power steering pump.

in year 2000 things changed as they made the valve changeable without replacing the intake, but anything before 2000 you must replace the intake.

I did mine and it was not difficult at all. See all my pics. fifth pic shows the valve I speak of

Why can't you just put another flap in there. It's only held in by a spring?

See this thread, it SHOULD be replaceable, it is silly and a waste to have to replace the entire intake due to a simple blow valve, see this thread, this guy seems to have been able to order one, see the last post in the thread, $25?

The replacable one is 2000 and up. I was going to attempt to replace the valve on mine but the hinge is moulded to the intake itself. on the 2000+ the whole valve screws to the intake. I have reviewed the post on the other forum and I believe they were referring to a 2001. Someetimes you can clean out the area around where the flapper seals but usually it comes back. I had it cleaned twice on my 97 seville and it came right back

Rockfangd, in your fith picture the flap has the orange seal in it. My orange seal is what Is leaking. The flap is held in with a spring like a mouse trap. At the junk yard I used a flat head screw driver to go under the spring and the whole flap just came rite out. I got one off of a 99 Seville and one from a 96 elderodo. Was your leak frome the black plastic or the actual flap

the black plastic. It looked pitted and was causing it to leak.

I also have my old intake still, so I will have to try to remove the flap. thanks

finally the pictures work. this is one i pulled from junk yard. the orange seal that goes around it is on top and bottom. the one in my car is just flapping around. im afraid i am going to have to take power steering pump off the get to it though. i have changed alternators and simple things but this water pump seems very sophisticated. maybe because of its placement but i am not the likes of changing an iss. oil changes and tinny minor jobs i can do. mainly because its the only car i got to get around. cant dive into something that takes to long or I'm screwed.

At the link I posted above, he was able to replace the over pressure valve on a 99 for $25. I would look around to see if you can find it. Ill post over on that forum and see where they got the part from. The 99 and 96 are similar

See this thread, the person at this thread replaced the valve on a 97 Deville, that valve MUST be available someplace.

My only thing is I don't have high idle just throwing codes 171 and 174 and I can hear a slight whistle. Maybe I have caught it early but I'm gonna call caddy dealer in morning.

I found this. I also think I found part number on sparky's thread. Check this one out.

That is an interesting thread. Heck, if you seal it closed the only thing that can happen is that you blow up your intake, then you can buy the intake then. Keep in mind however that you risk being injured by flying shrapnel if you ever are standing over the engine reving it and it back fires into the intake if you decide to seal it. You will need to keep that in mind.

I just changed it. Took the power steering pump off. But now car won't start. I unhooked the negative like manual said but when I put it back on I keep hearing pops on other side of car now when I try to start it just clicks once.

Ok so I have a bad positive terminal. Nothing major. I drove car to gas station n back. No codes for emissions and it seems I am getting better gas mileage and throttle response. What all I did today is change the over preserization relieve valve. Just the flap not whole thing. It worked. Then I cleaned the transmission connector but it was real dirty. Gonna give it a few days n do it again as I am still getting the 717 code. Then I changed fuel filter. Sprayed my pcv and fpr with cleaner. Then cleaned my throttle body. It was in very much need of it. But now I'm tired as I work third shift so until tonight's drive to work I will update u then.
