What does this mean?

I'm getting a current code on my 98 Seville. It's RIM-B1009..

I looked it up and it says: B1009 - EEPROM Checksum Error

What does that mean?

The reason why I checked the codes in the first place was because when I tried to start the car, all it did was click. All the lights worked good and bright and it wasn't like the battery was dead.. I kept trying to start it and after a few tries it finally started.

Also, I keep getting the suggest the Headlights message and it was day time and nice a bright.. No codes for that one came up. I don't know the history of the car, Just got it from the auction.. Thanks..

Happy Holidays.. :D

Try cleaning the battery terminals and see if that goes away, the starting problem is indicative of dirty terminals, make sure you take apart the two positive cables and clean them very good, Mike

if that fails however I would try using the spare key for a while and see if that helps. Sometimes does transistors (or whatever) within the key will do that. I had the exact same symptoms in my 97 Aurora and I thought the starter was crapping out, a friend suggested the key might be a the reason and I never had it happen again.

Hey guys. Thanks for the info.. Well I checked the cables and they were clean but not all that tight.. So I cleaned and tightened the cables and the car still does it occasionally.. I was able to start it on the first try today and I checked the codes. It still had a current code of RIM-B1009.. So I cleared the codes and re checked them and it was gone.. Then I started the car again without a problem and re checked the codes and the RIM-B1009 was back on again.. And it started right up that time.. The other day I noticed that when it wouldn't start I put the car in neutral and it started right up.. Maybe I need a new neutral safety switch?? Where is this switch located? I really don't think it's the starter...

Now, The positive cable, It goes from the battery under the back seat to the fuse box. Now from there to the box under the hood in the engine compartment, Is the cable one piece or is there another connection I may be missing between them???

Mattd, I only have the one key for this car.. So I can't try that.. But thanks for the info..

I think the neutral saftey switch is on top of the trans near the TB, or atleast in that general location. Follow the shift cable to it. Check it by moving the gear selector while trying to start the car. If it starts, it is likely bad or out of adjustment.

As far as the headlights suggested during daylight, I'd check the light sensor on the top of the dash (the flat one, not the two domed ones).

Here is a photo of the Park Neutral Position Switch from my 96 manual, I think this is what you are looking for, Mike

I looked it up and it says: B1009 - EEPROM Checksum Error

What does that mean

While I'm certainly not an electrical guru owning a lot of CNC machining equipment has forced me to be somewhat knowledgeable.

An EEPROM is a chip that you can write a program to. When the chip "boots" up it goes through a diagnostic routine. If things don't add up you get a checksum error, which basically means the program on the chip has become corrupted in some way.

Since you've cleaned and tightened the battery cables I suspect that the chip is going bad.

HIH

YMMV
